I just got back from a short visit to California with new camera in hand. Here are a few shots of how things are growing without me. My son Dorian for scale.

Here are a few of Dypsis onilahensis --- upright form. This was introduced by Mardy Darian about 16-18 years ago, and was the only form available in California until about 10 years ago.

This is the form that has been confused with another Madagascar palm. Notice the robust trunk in the last pic. One of the features that clearly differentiates this one from the other.

Cool pics Dean, never get tired of your Cali garden. Your is right by my sons daycare so I drive by from time to time. Recently it looked like something was completely burned that looked fine a couple of months ago. What was that palm? Also really like your Palmpedia site, it gets better each time I visit it.

Hey Shon,

Don't know what would have burned that didn't do so earlier. I did loose an Arenga engleri to a gopher (I think) out front. Maybe that was it. I know the frost didn't get that one.

Dean,

Absolutely beautiful. That D. onilahensis is quite large. Mine are now about 6-7', so I can't wait. Anyway, a great looking collection. Feel free to show us more. :D

Your palms are awesome Dean! Wow! Ditto on the decipiens. They sure are stout.

I had no idea that onilahensis trunks got that fat! Makes me second guess where I planted mine.

Biggest A. wrightii I have seen in a personal collection in CA.

The monticola looks sooooo healthy!!

Great job brother! And all still cranking while you are away. Super.

Great pics Dean.  It looks like the garden isn't the only thing growing while you're away.  How much fertilizer are you putting on Dorian?  He's freakin' huge now!  I've gotta get back into the gym so Dorian dosen't beat me up.  All this palmcardio (new palm term) is slimmin' me out!

Matt, I hear you.

As you know, he has always been on the slim side. I asked him his weight, and to the pound he is the same as me now. You aren't the only one in danger. The other bummer is he is making my palms look that much smaller now.

To the rest of you.

Sorry about the family talk.  :)

Me too. There is no 'Travelers', but the R. 'monticola' looks like one if you quint a lot.  :)

Dave,

The DD was purchased from fellow forum member Bo around 1990 as a 15 gal, and put in the ground a year or two later.
