Chocolate Chambeyronia

Hey all,

I got this palm many years ago at a big box store post housing crash (2008). Planted on a hillside where waters a challenge, shaded for a couple years until the tree providing the shade fell over.  So it’s been a relatively slow grow, and seen it’s  share of challenges. But it seems to be finally coming into its own and every ring of trunk is getting wider.   Perhaps it’s just because it has grown more slowly, but it’s form has taken on an absolutely beautiful shape over the past couple of years.  The latest spear opened a beautiful red, and then faded to this beautiful chocolate reddish brown color over the course of a few days.  It’s getting to be a pretty common palm, but I thought I’d share…

I've seen this before. It's like you got robbed from having the pretty red leaf but at the same time time this color is quite unique. Enjoy it!

Robbed? He should have been charged extra!

That purple is magnificent.

It is not dead, it is just senescence.

Thanks for the kind comments! The “hookeri” version of this that’s growing on the other side of the yard throws that more typical blood red leaf, holds its leaves in a more upright manner, and is a faster palm. Either way, this genus stops people in their tracks.
