Here is Lodoicea maldivica growing at Flamingo Gardens in Ft. Lauderdale. It looks a bit tattered from last years hurricanes. It was growing in shade, looks very sunny now.

Flamingo Gardens is inland quite a way.  The palm has done remarkably well in that location.

Sorry to be picky fellas, but isn't Flamingo in Davie, FL?

I was there last November.  They offered a "hurricane discount" because everything was so destroyed.  They did have a cougar- that was pretty cool.

Wow, the overhead canopy is completely toast.  When I was there last, L.maldivica was shaded by a high canopy.  Those damned hurricanes.

The tree canopy was hit bad, especially when you first go in. Most of the debris was cleaned up, I didn't see any fallen trees still laying around. Further into the garden the Ficus, huge Ear Tree and African Mahogany were mostly fine and the group of old Southern Live Oaks near the house were alright.

Or is it some other type of animal?  I though it was a cougar.

Flamingo Gardens is in Davie, which is inland due west of Ft. Lauderdale.

I am no large cat expert, but your probably looking at a Florida panther.

Here is the photo, from July 2006. I haven't been back since so don't know how the palm is. I don't remember seeing a cougar/panther but there is a FL Bobcat exhibit

If it is 10yrs old from seed, it is a slow grower.

It it normal for them to be 3meters tall O.A. after 10 years of growth from seed?
