close up of the leaves.  It scares me when the leaf comes out all white.

Any palm with heavy variegation will burn in any sun. From my experience, variegated palms typically look ratty since those fronds (or areas of frond) are not producing any chlorophyll....and then turns brown or discolored even further.

I have had a few like that in the nursery, they have either grown out to the original form or faded away as you said and died.

Maybe the lack of chlorophyl in the leaves?????

cheers

Sorry you've lost yours Gene. Hope I may have a better luck with at least a couple of mine here...

One of my friends (a collector from Amazonia) had an old variegated standard Areca catechu and most of the seedlings used to come out the same way. I have a couple grown up ones too, from a previous batch, and they still keep the variegation after a few years...I'm growing them in partial shade, organically fertilized:

Good looking variegation on those seedlings. They look a lot more stable than the one I had.

Does the variegation also show up on the petioles and crownshaft?

Keep up updated on their progress. Do you have picture of a mature one?
