Roystonea violacea is native to the far eastern tip of Cuba where it grows on savannahs and hillsides. It is, far and away, the most colorful species in this genus and very rare outside Cuba. It is named for the color of its male flowers, but young palms have tan to milk chocolate trunks overlaid with a purple hue. I have been seeking this species since I first learned of it. A few years ago, RPS offered seeds for the first time I was aware. I bought 10 of which only 1 germinated - but one was enough. I've been following my seedling's progress, which has been trouble free. It was outgrowing its 14" treepot so yesterday we planted it. I took the following photos. Okay, right now it may not look like something special but someday I hope it will be.

I defer to Meg. The pictures of this specimen on PalmPedia from Cuba are amazing.

Geraldo has a mature specimen at his place in Deerfield that does not appear to have the same characteristics. It seems that the incredible characteristics of this palm do not exhibit themselves outside of Cuba. I hope I’m wrong.

Yeah the pics on palmpedia of the species outside of habitat don't look correct. Even the leaves look different. I suspect they may have been mislabelled...

I got about 200 seeds at the same time as Meg, and got 4 to sprout. I'll be donating 3 of them to the Kopsick Palm Arboretum to see how they'll do there.

The specimen on PalmPedia from Cuba is amazing. It will be interesting to see if your seeds and Meg's are the real deal". Luckily, Roystonea is a very quick grower and we should have a good idea within five (5) years!

I'll be disappointed if it's not the "real deal". If it is not I hope it is not just another regia. I do remember the seeds weren't shaped the same as regia: ovoid vs round. Guess I'll just have to  wait.

Photo from March & October 2021. It's bigger now but nowhere near enough to flower yet. I believe it is slower growing than rocket regia. May be a bit more cold sensitive as it took some cold damage last winter. It also shows lighter green leaves in full sun compared to regia.
