I've been growing Mirabilis jalapa from seed and saving the tubers for a couple of years now.

Now I'm trying to grow M. longiflora and hybridize the two.

Anyone know a source for the hybrid or a pic of what it might look like?

I also would like to add multiflora in the mix for hardiness.

Brian:

I used to raise Mirablis hybrids in Cleveland.  The tubers overwintered well, if heavily mulched.  So did dahlias (which refuse to overwinter here in So-Cal)

Dave,

Why do Dahlias not overwinter in SoCal?  I would think the drier winter (than ours) would be good for them.  I have no problem with imperialis every year.

Anyone,

Do Mirabilis jalapa always come in a multitude of colors or are there some selections one can make of a single color?  I have never been fond of the multi-color varieties.  Too much.  Pardon my ignorance -- I've never tried to grow anything other than Mirabilis longiflora.

Steve, I'll leave some out this year and see what happens, thanks!

Jason,

I started out with solid pink/purple and yellow flowers.  6 years later there are solid pinks, yellow, white, and red flowers.  There is also every possible combination of variegated flowers.  Some of the plants are like the 'limelight' cultivar.

My personal favorite is color is solid white, but red is a close second.  Hopefully longiflora will bloom next week...
