There were once 3 beautiful palms here. Late last summer on a windless afternoon the we heard a crash.  The closest snapped at 90 degrees around the 6 foot level. A month later the middle on did the same thing  this time the trump slipped straight down parallel to the trunk.  Again no wind just sudden collapse.  Now there is one. As I walked by it other day I saw a 3 inch woodpecker hole. There was no holes in the other 3.   I know what caused this but I am curious to what would guess

Was there a weak spot in the trunk from that severe winter in 2010?

You nailed it. It showed no issues.  Beautiful palm that grew to level where the trunks structural strength simply could not hold up the palms.  They just failed at the weakest spot in the trunk.  The odd think was they failed with no external stresses like wind. It was simply the weight of the crown.    The rope you see is encouraging the palm to fall away from the house. It is too wet to bring in equipment to safely remove.  As soon as I can it will be gone.
