Germinating Ptychosperma elegans seed

Recommended Posts

I was in Fort Lauderdale last weekend and picked up some seed beneath a Ptychosperma elegans and was wondering what the best way to germinate them this time of year would be? Any suggestions.  I normally germinate palm seeds from my area via the ziploc bag with potting mix method.  What do you all think will work better?  I'm in northeast Florida.  We have had a very mild winter with no frost and lowest temperature at my house near the Intracoastal Waterway of 38 degrees one night. I have lived in this house for 39 years and this is the warmest winter ever.  I have lived in St. Augustine almost my entire life and I don't remember a winter where night time temperatures have stayed this warm all winter.

Were they fresh seed or last years? If they were on the ground and white (or turning dark) already they might be last years. Try to crush them if they 're white and/or dark with no skin., if they crush easily they're no good.

If you don't have a heating pad or whatever put the baggie in a sealed container up in your attic. Bugs like cockroaches will chew a hole through a baggie to get the moisture so put the baggies in a thicker container. I put "snack" size ziplock bags in the snap tight clear plastic pastry containers they sell things like apple turnovers in at the grocery store. Sometimes I'll stack a bunch of baggies in a coffee container.  Stick them up in the attic for a couple weeks and then check on them once a week till I see germination.

Ripe on the right, mechanically cleaned fresh seed on the left in top pic. Bottom pic self explanatory.

Looks like they are last years.  Too bad.  I was hoping I could get some fresh seed. I have not been able to find Ptychosperma elegans in any of the big box stores like Home Depot or Lowes in Palm Beach County when I am down there.  Any ideas where I can find them for sale in Palm Beach County?  We go down there quite often.

I sell seed, need to create a listing for the P. elegans, I should have done earlier this week. If you're down in Palm Beach area I'm right off of I-95 and have seedlings. Will send a PM
