So far this palm seems to grow without issue in Central Texas. Minor scattered cold burn spots on leaves when down to 14 degrees a few winters ago. This individual is growing in a sheltered south-facing spot

Looks good. There's a nice sized one at Mercer.  I think I would like it more if it were trimmed a little. I recently put a five gallon in the ground here. It doesn't look like much for now.

You might try Phoenix canariensis x roebellini. I got a couple from Patric Schafer. They grow vigorously and look nice.

Did this palm survive the big Texas freeze? I'm growing one in a pot, but I wonder if it's safe to put in the ground down here long term.

Not likely unless protected.  But a small Phoenix is easy to protect if prepared.
