Been battling this queen palm for some time now since a bad storm basically broke all the fronds in half back in January.

I have cut it back 2 times (second time today) and treated with H2O2 flush for about 15 mins, followed by about 2 handfuls of PalmGain in the pot, and watered it in, in an attempt to spark growth.

Here are 3 pictures of it today.

What are your opinions?

When I cut it back, the growth point has a sweet/sour smell to it, white/yellow in color, and it foamed heavily when H2O2 was applied.

Good heavens! :bemused:

I'm not sure if it's dead so to speak, but it certainly doesn't look good. The central spear may be toast, but with any luck it will re-sprout again. I don't know if there's any way back from that though. Only time will tell.

Looks like a postmortem exam to me.  That was a pretty aggressive cut back.  The only time I have ever cut a palm that far back was in the process of removal.  I guess there might be a chance based on seeing DoomsDave's Pritchardia spark back to life from a major hacking (intended to remove it if I recall).  Unfortunately it isn't a clumping species either.  I lost a Dypsis sp "mayotte" several year ago and didn't dig up the roots only to have a new shoot spring up a couple of years later.  That however is a clumping species.

It could be useful for mounting an epiphyte or two though.

Bless you for being a good palm daddy!

You obviously care about it a lot.

I have to concur with @Tracy and say cut 'er down and try something else. Queens are too tender for where you are.

I'd try like expletive to get a Butiagrus mule,  that is a cross between a Butea and a Queen. Those are tougher than taxes, but much nicer to have.

Also, see my PM to you.

Hope you and your family are safe in all this covidity.

Thanks guys, I think its a goner as well :(

@DoomsDave Well, I have a mule palm, its potted for now, I may plant it one day, but not for now.

Thanks for the PM however I don't really care for any chamaedorea species at all... They just don't appeal to me haha.

@joe_OC I probably did... Its a spear that I can see at least. I just think its dead at this point.

Cut 12" down.  Peel off everything and eat the heart.   Queen palm heart is pretty good.

Thanks for your candor !

If you plant the mule give it lots of room.

18” across the trunk or more and 30 feet across the crown.

@DoomsDave LOL

Sorry, I don't mean anything by it haha.

Unfortunately at the moment, I don't really think I do have room for the mule.

It will most likely stay potted until either it cant anymore, or I figure out something in the backyard and plant it... which who knows.

I would call it quits on it. Its been that way since January so i think its been too long it would have already came back by now. If its dead enough and you have enough space burn it, if not then dump it in the woods and let nature take its course!

@JLM Yep, today the central spear is sunk down into the center and browned out...

I said goodbye today.

Those darn storms killed it. Looks like more of the same going into this weekend with another Day 4 level 3 risk. Same as Easter Sunday. Then according to the models it looks like we might have another 2 severe outbreaks back-to-back after this next one. It then appears we will have a break from the storms!
