Still a little new to crownshafted, self-shedding Palms.

Can I go ahead and trim off these completely brown fronds on my royal? Lost 3 since planting. The new center spear is vigorous and green, so assuming it is just from planting in hot dry weather.

Yeah, but make sure you're below the growth point or they'll just come back again later.  :floor2:

Royals are self cleaning, i dont see a need to do it. Im still confused about how all the green works below the frond. Does that come off with the frond or no? I thought i had seen a video somewhere of someone pulling a dead frond off of i think a King palm and the whole green part had turned brown, but when the guy pulled it off more green was under it. I also hear that is what makes the rings in the trunk aswell.

@JLM

Well yes,  the newer fronds which are beneath the older fronds will be green. Or greener since they are younger....

By the way, your royal looks completely normal if you were not sure. It will not develop the look you are wanting for a couple of years. Once the gray trunk develops the branches will start to grow longer and arch downward. It will not take too long if the weather cooperates. And supplemental watering is important if you’re not getting rain. I try to water mine 2X a week.

Thanks! It gets hit with irrigation sprayers during the overnight cycle when the controller determines soil moisture is too low and I’ve also been hand watering the royals and cocos since it’s been hot AND dry (humidity levels in the 30 percent range during the day).
