Royal palm peeling off trunk

One of my royal palms finally shed an old leaf base today (must have been from a frond trimmed off at the nursery). 
 

When I went to inspect it, I noticed it had started peeling some of the gray wood trunk off. It was hanging on to the trunk by a few threads. I doused a blade in 90% alcohol and cut the threads off. 
 

Is this normal for it to damage the trunk like that? I just hate for the palm to have an opening to living tissue for microbes to get in. 
 

Also, this leaf base didn’t even seem loose before. Is the sudden shedding Possibly a sign that the trunk is beginning to fatten?

That happens it’s not a problem. You can always spray some hydrogen peroxide on it and that will sterilize any exposed tissue.

Powdered sulfur is my 'go-to' response for injured surface on palms., easy, inexpensive, and long lasting until the surface dries up.
