Unexpected Cyphosperma flowering

Hey all,

I've had this palm in the ground for 6 years or so. It's not really in a very good spot, getting pounded every winter with rain runoff from the roof going right into its growing point. You'd think that being from Fiji, it would just get a fungal infection, roll over and die, but year after year it soldiers on. Plus, it's a magnet for mealybug which I'm constantly having to beat back. So, noticing a flower stalk this morning was a bit of a surprise. Not simply because of the less than ideal condition it's in, but because it's pretty young. Would love to hear others experiences with these..

@quaman58 you go!

Those are supposed to be litter trappers in the crown. Maybe put sawdust in there?

That is really cool Bret. The palm in question looks to be C.naboutinense ? I have seen pics of these flowering at a young age so maybe this is normal? I had one growing for several years and it was a tough palm, until I lost canopy and it got roasted. It to was a mealy bug magnet also planted in full shade.

I'll second Adam's comment about it being cool and add congratulations on keeping this going.  No experience with this species of Cyphosperma on my part.  The only one of this genus I have experience with is C. balansae.  I wouldn't have known which species it was unless Adam had id'd it for us.  It is informative that both of you have found this palm to be a mealy bug magnet.

Thanks for commenting guys..

Dave, I had no idea that they were "litter trappers" , but that would make sense!

Adam, yup, naboutinense.  Funny, I even looked up the spelling prior to the post so I spelled it correctly.  Then neglected to tell you guys what it is. Good eye! For what it's worth, I've also tried C. trichospadix, which are indistinguishable to me at a young age. But they won't grow for me here.

Tracy, C. balansae is one of my favorite palms. Fortunately they grow pretty well for us near the coast...

Similar experiences with the above species here. Naboutinese did well (in a pot) last winter, Trichospadix croaked. Balansae is an awesome grow in the ground.

I put some dirty sawdust in one of mine before I sold it, and it was like flicking a switch; it just perked right up.
