FYI,

some if you will know Dale Motiska, who operated a great little palm-centric nursery outside Vacaville when I lived in Fairfield from 2012-2015. He has a large property in the top of the English Hills, where he’s been growing tropicals not otherwise seen in NorCal. (I’ll attach some pix of his place in about 2014.)

Anyway, I’m sad to report that the fires have burned down his garage and ~60% of his greenery. His person, house, and good chunk of his plans did survive, though—thank goodness!

Aw nutz, Dale was my exotics supplier and a plant buddy, I was concerned about his place, thanks for updating us.  My place in CA is north of him and thus far remaining 4 miles or so away from flames.

The smoke is so thick here at my place that you can just barely see the sun in the photo. Dale planted huge (15’ of trunk) Phoenix canariensis by crane at one of my projects in Los Altos Hills. They never skipped a beat and have grown well due to his master planting. Sad to hear about his losses but glad to hear what was saved.

Sad to hear!  I have got many more common/cold hardy palms from Dale.

The smoke seemed to improve the last couple of days, but back with a vengeance today.  It's nasty!

Yes, my neighborhood has the freshest air in SF, as we are at the western edge of the city and enjoy the marine on-shore breezes.  Not today, we have heavy smoke smell and a fine, white ash falling on my plants.  I can't decide to garden wearing a mask, or to stay inside and binge watch opera!  :D

This isn’t CA but I recently posted a topic called Castle Creek Filifera about finding one of two native palm groves in Arizona.  This photo was taken last night from my back porch - this is probably 8-10 miles west of that grove and grew from 400 to 10,000 acres in under 24 hours.  Luckily it appears to be moving south and not east:

I'm dubious, Dave.  Are you a tenor ?   Senor Domingo, the grand old lion of the opera world is 'on the outs' now due to his unwanted attention towards nubile young sopranos. :P

If opera is too tedious or heavy duty I would recommend his pop album "Cien Anos de Mariachi".  He does mariachi standards and you will never hear more clear and perfect enunciation of the vocals.  Paloma Querida is one of my favorite tracks on the album.  :greenthumb:

Oddly, Mr. Voicebox ("Signor casella vocale") manages a wide range. Take a deep breath and stuff happens. Sorporano mom hated when I sung higher than her. Also get down to Johnny Cash-land. But I suspect connoisseurs will cringe.

Miss hell out of karaoke . . .

Wow! So I have learned D. Petty loves opera and D.D. can sing it!

More icing on the cake to PalmTalk.

I love the way Domingo sings. He has "held" on to his voice because he stays within the heldentenor range.  (Mostly Deutsch operas, strong vocals).

Personally I love his rendition from the operetta "the merry widow": lippen schweigen.

Dave, you should start making youtube videos and sing!

Would love to hear your singing voice.

@GottmitAlex not so fast about me singing it, but I make a heroic effort! Cut and pasted @Darold Petty 's suggestion. Yeah, mariachi rocks too. My dad loved it too.

Fantastic! And yes, I love mariachi when sung by folks who have the pipes:

Maria de Lourdes (huge hit in Holland), Placido, Jorge Negrete, etc.

Ok then, do a karaoke vid!

Yes, I admit it, growing up on rock&roll, I now mostly listen to opera.  (I am a 'ringhead')

I even have an opera/palm tree joke!  I have two Trachycarpus wagnerianus palms in my garden.  They are siblings from the same seed batch.  One is male, the other female.  So what are their names?  Why Siegmund und Sieglinde !!  (hint, consult the synopsis of Die Walkure) :mrlooney:

But opera's cool, especially because it's unloved by, well, you know . . .

Had a paper route in Cleveland, in 1984, and one of my customers was this old very genteel, and very nice couple who, they said were season ticket holders to the Cleveland Opera. For some reason, they said, hey, hubby's ill (alas, obviously) so, how about you and a friend go see "Magic Flute" at the opera house. On our ticket. (Yeah, looking for young 'uns to carry the torch.)

It was arranged.

Mom and dad couldn't go. Bummed but glad I got invited. Maybe break free of pop-jail?

Oops, yike

Anyway, had a bud who played in a metal band and did a reasonable "fac" of Robert Plant in Stairway to Heaven, and we wore our suits, with Chucks (mine were red, high tops of course) and we expected snootiness, but, no! Fans (skewing old, like elderly) welcomed us dorks with open arms. They, (including an old guy with his Chucks!) invited us into their box soaring above everything. When the Queen of the Night sang her aria, my bud kinda went covid, but it was glorious.

Brain gets full remembering.

Paper route customer couple asked how I liked it, and my googly eyes said it all, and they smiled at each other.

Later I told them I was moving to California, and they said you go, fella.

Getting back to our fire thread,  the Dypsis decipiens from 'Jeff in Modesto' was salvaged by Gary Gragg.  He placed it at his property in Winters.  I believe that Winters is both north and east of the Vacaville fire that damaged Dale Motiska's place, so this palm is likely OK.

I watched Domingo sing the role of Cyrano at La Scala in Milan !

Cool!

I suspect PD needed minimal, if any, “Schnozz enhancement.”

The Dark Tower is relatively close to LA Opera and all that; right across the street from the courthouse that’s now pretty much cordoned off.

One of our clients was a big patron of the opera, who for awhile was married to a soprano.
