Well, after 17 years this gigas has decided to seed. I had another one 10 feet away that set seed after 15 years.

My last Caryota.......ever.

Sadness. Mine is in the ground 17 years. I’m sure mine is headed that way one of these days....

Congratulations Jim. How tall do you guess it ended up at?

Well, gee @Palm Tree Jim maybe consider a mitis one day? They don't get huge and tipsy like the others do.

My guess is approximately 30-35 feet or so.

Okay, up to you.

The wood from the bases can be turned into pretty bowls and cups . . . .

I agree with you, Jim. I have one Caryota Gigas left and that will be the end of Monocarpic palms for me.

Had a Caryota maxima, started seeding after 12 years, 50 ft overall height. Two storey home 10 ft to the east. Lots of other plants around it. No access for a boom picker. Had to pay a climer to take it down in 2 ft chunks. To save money, the clean up was on me. Lots of work and cost for 12 years of enjoyment. No regrets, I got the experience - but never again.

The Tahina, C. talipot and C. utan shouldn't flower in my lifetime - so I'm good.

They are beautiful, just problematic when you have to remove them.  I said I would never plant another Caryota when I removed the last one, but found what was labeled as Caryota no.  Having failed once with an incorrect ID on this species, I tried again... yes, another failure but I haven't torn it out yet.  It probably will end up removed before it seeds as this one is in a tight space along the side yard but it's providing some added shade until my KO gets some trunk and fulfills that task.

How long before you start the removal process as you do have some time.  Since my last one flowered in late summer or early autumn I got on the removal right away to avoid the risk of having roots start to weaken during our wet & windy season of winter.  It's something to consider if you have valuables nearby it.  I'm trying to remember what year I planted my C gigas in Carlsbad, but it had to be somewhere in the mid to early 00's so near the age of yours.  Not looking forward to removing it from the slope in the backyard, its in an awkward spot overhanging a covered patio too boot.

Are you really certain this is your last Caryota Jim or will those cool bipinnate leaves tempt you again???
