There are a lot of directions one can go depending on the climate zone, as well as many posts and a dedicated forum here for "Tropical Looking Plants-other than palms".  Granted many of us get off the "Tropical Looking Plants" on that forum.  I'll list a few though

A is for Aroids & Aloidendrons & Aloes

B is for Bromeliads & Bananas & Brighamia insignis

C is for Cycads (Ceratozamias & Cycas) & Cussonia spicata

D is for Dendrobiums & Dioons both too many to list

E is for Encyclias (Mexican species predominantly in my case) & Encephalartos (could spend a day on these)

F is for Ficus trees... so many to choose from

G is for Guava trees

H is for Haemanthus and Hoyas

I is for "Ituri" Encephalartos

J  ... I'm "Just"" missing

K is for Kalanchoe & Kumara plicatilis

L is for Laelias (lots of species), Lemboglossum (a couple of species) & Lepidiozamias

M is for Macrozamias & Microcycas (only one "calcoma") & Mangos & Maxillarias & Miltonias but don't leave off the Monstera deliciosa

N is for Naked Lady's (ok it really should be under A for Amaryllis belladonna)

O is for Orchids (particularly here the Oncidiums and Oerstedella) & Orthophytum (bromeliad family) & Operculicarya decaryi

P is for Papaya & Pelargoniums & Philodendrons & Phaleonopsis

Q I'm Quite out of luck again

R is for Rhycholaeliana digbyana

S is for Schomburgkia halbingeriana (Laelia superbiens) ---- DoomsDave is in search of this one, don't let him take mine!

T is for Tilandsias (Totally too many to try to tick off today)

U is Unlikely to have any in my garden

V is for Vandas both mounted and in pots

W is Wanting something to grow with my Woodyetia bifurcata and Woodyetia hybrid (Foxy Lady)

Y nothing here in my yard

Z is for the many Zamias one can grow with Palms

I live in the tropics so I guess I have no choice but to have a tropical feel. I think some good plants are alocasia, philodendron, croton, ti plants, cycads, coleus, ginger (they have really cool flowers and the  variety here has palm like leaves), dracaena, ferns, selaginella,  bananas, persian shield, bromeliad, birds nest fern on a palm trunk.

Dittos on everything so far (not that crazy about Ti plants). My ultimate yard would have: Jatropha multifida. And a bunch of ornate aroids. Rocks and water features to not over-plant. Sanchezia. Mexican/tropical milkweed. Both kinds of plumerias. Gunneras.

Very very beautiful garden, Jim. I agree with the book comment.  You should add some calatheas and torch ginger.

All those choices are great I live in Phoenix where this summer has been hotter than hell so a lot of those don’t work I love aromas in the garden so I have a lot of Arabian jasmine and Natal plums

True, but doesn’t constantly rain. Gets dry in winter sometimes no rain for months and months... he would have a bore supplementing garden. My grass is currently sand... due to no rain. But agree still a lot easier in Brisbane than most.

How about some visuals to go along with my earlier post on this.
