Cycas thouarsii or rumphii

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

i have a 12 years old male biheads cycas bought in Italy as circinalis. Can someone help me to recognize it? Is this a rumphii or a thouarsii? looking online it seems to be a thouarsi for the cone and the apex twisted around the cone.

Thanks

I don't have any rumphii to compare but have some Cycas thouarsii.  A male Cycas thouarsii cone from a little over a week ago which is still pushing out, so not fully mature as some of the ones in your photo.  If you look at the row I have in the second photo, the one thing I notice is that my known Cycas thouarsii tend to be fuller than yours.  The last photo is my oldest female, which again holds a really full head of leaves.  The solo female was after I had just trimmed off some of the lower leaves on both the main caudex as well as some pups that are on the backside of the plant as shown in this photo.  I have a difficult time telling these apart, but none of my Cycas thouarsii have split.  My cousin has a grouping of four Cycas rumphii near her front doorway and all are split heads as well as pups, some split into the heads about 4' high.  I don't know if my experience is an outlier on the trunks splitting or if that is typical characteristic for rumphii but not thoursii.

Thanks a lot Tracy for the informations and for your photos.  I notice that the cone of my plant is different for colour and leaves seem to be more longer.

You have very beautiful plants
