I have a nice 1 gallon Arenga Hookeriana that I have been bringing up to size.  It is now only a 1 gallon size from a seedling and this has been accomplished in just under 3 years.  Slow!

Do these do well in So Cal once up to say a 3-5 gallon size?

I am going to "house" it one more year and plant out the next.  If any of you are growing them in Coastal Southern California please let me know how it is doing for you.  Pictures are always nice too.

Thanks,  Jeff

Way cool plant.  I saw it in Hawaii at Deans place in Kona and I was surprised at how small it was.  Not like the A. engleri, undulatafolia, pinnata monsters at all.  I think Paul has one, ask him.

Jeff,

I am growing this Arenga (the ONLY Arenga I have) since it is so small and compact. It is a slow grower to begin....but once established, it does begin to move. I have mine planted on the edge of the brackish river, so it does get some salt spray from time to time and does not appear to be affected by it. It is in filtered morning sun, but is protected from the harsh western afternoon sun. It appears to be happy.

I am in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, so my humidity is typically very high.

Mines a 5 gallon, but looking rough. Or it could just be a similar Arega. Jumbo leaves, in my greenhouse.

Hi Bill

They do not all come true to type from seed as some through back to Arenga caudata so you have a good one Bill!!

Hi Steve

In the tropics these can be grown in the full sun, but if you get the cold like we do here they will need protection of a canopy to look there best, they will take 3 deg C with no problems if colder than this they will mark a little, just have them a little more protected if your temp gets lower than this with plenty of mulch!!

I hope this helps.

Jeff,

I have a nice looking Arenga hookeriana growing in San Clemente for about 10 years now. You should have no problem in Dana Point.
