Jubaea chilensis growth

New member with a couple of photos of the favorite palm in my yard.  Picked this one up in early spring as a very pot bound 5g.  It had split the pot wide open and appeared to have been that way for a long time.  Nothing but roots in the pot and it was light as a feather.  Put it in the ground and it really took off.    Hoping these are not as slow as a lot of people report because I'm not that young anymore.  If anyone has tricks to speed them up I'd sure appreciate it.

Welcome to PT, nice to see another local.  That's a pretty nice looking one, and fortunately our climate is pretty good for these. I have heard of some trunking ones either in Medford or Roseburg, but have yet to see the pictures.  Anywhere these are not the fastest growing palms, but I can't say that I think they are not exceptionally slow here, more of a medium pace.  Faster than what they would see in the UK thanks to our hot summers but slower than California due to the shorter growing season.

The only advice I can give you is to make sure it gets full sun, adequate water in summer and I also fertilize with Palmgain during spring and summer.  I order bags of it from Home Depot and have them delivered to my local store for free.  It's the only way I know of that we can get it here.

Here’s the biggest, if you can call It that Jubaea I have. This is 2 years growth from a strap leaf seedling.

One other tip if you don’t know already is to not cut any fronds off until they are completely brown.

As with most palms the bigger they get the faster they grow.

Wow, that's some fast growth!  I've got a three year old that is still in strap leaf.

I have more seedlings that  I have been growing out in my greenhouse.  I did put out another strap leaf seedling this spring in the hottest, sunniest part of my yard, in sandy soil so we'll see how that one does.

Palms always get brown tips.  Probably got a little dry during the summer, we get no rain for months and I rarely water my front garden.  It's all mediterranean plants that can take the heat and drought that we typically experience.

That's about the size I noticed they started growing faster.

If I were to move again, I'd shell out the money for at least a 15 gallon and save myself 10 or 15 years.

Ebay for seedlings they are pretty cheap and ship well.

15 gallon are $300-$350 here for local pickup, no shipping.  Add another $50-$100 for shipping.  Jungle Music sells them at $250 for that size plus shipping.

These are not cheap palms not matter how you slice it.

Seeds on ebay are cheap.  Pretty easy to germinate if you get good seeds and do it right.  I've got 60 seeds popping roots right now.  Funny thing is that I ordered so many seeds expecting to only get a few to germinate based on all of the stories I read.  Now I have a ton of them!

Did the same thing.  I ordered 100 even after getting 85% on the 20 I ordered from a user on here figuring that I probably wouldn't get repeat results.  Well, I was wrong.:D

I love that thread!  Gives me some hope that I may live long enough to see some trunk.

They?  There is only one planted in the ground.  Latest post shows what it looks like now in the first photo, and second photo is what it looked like one year ago when I first planted it.  It's the same palm.  Here it is from a different angle.  Getting a few new leaves.

May be an image of tree and nature
