Christmas Palm - Going for It

Picked up a Christmas Palm today at Earthworks in Jacksonville. I know it’s pushing the limits in my area at 9b but for the price I could not say no. Planting it in the backyard where it is ringed by tall pines and live oaks with house close by to reflect some heat. Hopefully I’ll be able to keep her alive and will eventually have a koi pond up close to it as well so that should also keep some heat there reflecting as it will be a large one.

Another beauty of a palm I saw was a King Alexander which was pricey and another that is questionable here. Loved the look though.

Congratulations on your purchase.  That is a nice looking Christmas palm.  Good luck.

Yes that is true and it was tempting but not with my wife there as the price was $1600 for a triple trunk about 15’ tall. Her eyes bugged out when I told her the price. Whereas my A. Medellii was $99 so I am okay gambling on it.

Also messed up on my zone, it’s 9a and not 9b so I am really pushing it. Oh well I will do my best.

Nice looking triple. You may want to hold off planting them until nights are reliably above 40-50 so they have months of warm/hot weather to establish themselves. If you don't expect to protect them all winter.

You gotta keep that thing in a pot and bring in in over the winter months.

Thats exactly how I treat mine and many other palms that hate our wet winters. Were not actually that cold but a couple cold spells a year some years we dont even get a freeze =)

Definitely not a z9a or even z9b palm. The last time we had a z9b night here - 2010 - the few Adonidias that survived didn't flower/fruit for two years.

keep it as a house plant in the winter and bring it out on your door step in the summer.

You can order them online, but mostly seedlings. I got one and I accidentally left it in the cold and nothing happened to it, they are quite hardy. They are fast growers too, especially once they get some size to them.
