I just bought a palm labeled “Ivory Nut Palm” at Hilo Garden Exchange without knowing which species it is. I am hoping it is Metroxylon amicarum. There are old fruiting M. amicarum at Hilo Arboretum (still closed sadly) so it’s possible the grower collected seed there. I’m not all that excited about growing the monocarpic Metroxylons so I hope it’s not that. Anyone able to help id?

Phytelephas macrocarpa from South America is the best known "ivory nut palm". But I read that in Africa other unspecified palms are also called ivory nut palms. Which one do you have? I really don't know and Phytelephas spp are rare. That's why common names are worthless and scientific names should only be used. Shame on that garden for not doing so. If what you have is Phytelephas macrocarpa be aware that they are dioecious and require male and female palms if you want them to reproduce. Can you tell which sex a dioecious palm is? Only when they mature and flower.
