Just curious why can't you grow them in Florida?  Is it a weather thing?

The prevailing wisdom is nematodes in the sandy soil kill them.  People have had limited success growing them in pots, but apparently they die almost immediately when planted in the ground.  I have seen only one large Trachy in Florida, at Green's Nursery in Apopka.  It's in a ~35 gallon pot and is 6' tall or so.  I've been tempted to buy it, but I'd hate to throw away money...

Among other things. They are temperate rather tropical palms and do not adjust well to 6-7 months of hot, humid days and sweltering nights. They need a cool-off at night after a hot day but they don't get that here much of the year. I have read that when temps reach the upper 80s into the 90s they stop photosynthesis. True? I don't know. I've also read they are very sensitive to nematodes, another FL bane. I've heard that some people in (N?)FL have them but they are few and far between. I had one once back in 1993/94 when I was new to palms. I bought a "Windmill Palm" - common names aren't just silly, they are deceptive - at a BB garden center. I mistook it for a Coccothrinax because, well, they look alike, right? It survived over a year before carking. But it was miserable the whole time. I want to grow palms not torture them.

The fronds design, the rough trunk, they just don't look that tropical and it's so overcultivated! It's usually the only palm tree anyone grows in the north so it's very annoying. I get that it's a very reliable palm, but c'mon, grow something else, at least a needle. Needle palms and sabal minor aren't cultivated much in Canada compared to trachycarpus and I hate that!

Saw some great examples of fortunei on a recent trip to Vancouver,Canada! (pnw?) Several homeowners in the area also had beautiful examples planted in their front yards. Palm trees growing, in the ground, in Canada,eh? Who would of thunk it?

That's not entirely true.  I knew of more needle palms than Trachycarpus in Southern Ontario, having lived there the first 40 years of my life.  Anyone who was interested in cold hardy palms usually had them because they were the hardiest, and easier to protect.  I personally had more needles and Sabal minors than Trachycarpus at any given time.

Don’t forgot that palms are adapted to their native habitat, so of course it is expected for them to not look great all the time everywhere else. Search up some pictures of them in their habitat in China.

I admit to removing nearly all my Trachycarpus fortunei to make room for more desirable species but have left this big one in my backyard to grow naturally with full skirt and reasonably nice canopy of leaves as shown in the photo. The other photos are of my T. martianus. I think they are the most tropical looking of the genus with their large bright green leaves.

Martianus really are the best in the genus. They grow well in central FL too and look like a pretty green cocothrinax (where its too cold for them)

Palms are not savage beast resistant aka Dahlia resistant (my dog) :bemused:

She'll destroy any of my palms if I don't cage them. She's only 2 years old so I'm hoping she'll out grow this stage soon.
