Bentinkia Condapanna & Cyphophoenix Nucele

First off all, happy new year to all my fellow palm loving friends. Let’s hope 2021 brings us all good things.

I just wanted to share a few shots of just a couple of my young palms that I think are looking pretty good so far this winter.

First, my little Bentinkia condapanna that was planted October 25th, 2019. It hasn’t been blazing fast but hasn’t been real slow either. It’s been pretty consistent so far. It’s pretty marginal for me but I think it likes this location which keeps it pretty shaded. I have another one just on the other side of the little water fall that gets more sun and gets some sun burn but hoping that one keeps chugging along as well.
Fingers crossed they both will continue to do well. I know they’ve only been in the ground 14 months so I’m just remaining cautiously optimistic at this point.

 

Next my young Cyphopheonix nucele. Older than the condapanna and not really too marginal. It’s starting to look nice IMO.

Nice Greg! This year I am going to try out a Bentinkia in the warmest part of my yard under canopy. Good to see it’s growing for you.

I like the  Bentinckia C. So much I planted two of them last year; one that gets a little summer sun but shaded when the sun gets low and another that gets a good amount of sun. The more shaded one is growing slower then the sunnier one but so far for me this has been a decent grower with no brown spot effects from the cold this winter. I also have about 20 sprouted cyphophoenix nucele seedlings that I sprouted from seed in 2020 hopefully omen of them makes it up to the size of your one day!

Looks good! In my limited experience both appreciate sun. Nucele may burn but pull through and gain some resilience. My Bentinckia in full shade is very unhappy. The other two in partial sun are reaching for the light. Good luck and enjoy!

I live in tropical north Australia and have great trouble trying to source this palm. I would love to have the opportunity to bring into my collection and eventually share with other palm collectors here in far North Queensland.

Sorry, I do not. I’ve only got this one Cyphophoenix nucele. I like these palms too. I see them on eBay sometimes.

 Someone here on palm talk may be able to point yo7 in the right direction though.

thanks for the reply. Yes you have an amazing specimen. I'm never too sure about eBay and the authenticity or viability hence why I've now joined palm talk and IPS. I know someone here bought a whole lot a seed that all turned out to be c.elegans. Poor guy. If you end up knowing anyone with legit viable seed please tag me In. Also looking for dypsis leocomalla ( sorry my letter ewe isn't working to spell it correctly) haha. Thanks again

I have a 1 gal Bentinckia that I purchased and will planted perhaps late April/May.

It was in the green house at the nursery so it’s going to need some time to acclimate before putting in ground.

Greg, I must have missed this post the first time around.  How big was your Cyphophoenix nucele when you planted it and how long ago?  I have one in the ground now from a 5 gallon in a winter full shade spot, and mid-day overhead sun spot during summer, but shade the rest of the day.  It is slower than molasses for me, opening maybe 2 new fronds per year (planted around 2015 I think).  Meanwhile, I have 3 Cyphophoenix elegans in varying amounts of sun but still more than the C nucele that have caught up and surpassed it.  I'm guessing your climate is relatively close to mine, so wondering if it was the placement and lack of direct sun that makes it so much slower than the C elegans in my yard.  Thanks in advance for your experience with this palm.

@Tracy....Here is the oldest picture I have of it on my iCloud. This is October 2017. I think it was planted not too long before this. Maybe even the spring of 2017. It’s been 3 1/2 years since this picture. Not real fast but I never really thought of it as super slow.  Lately it seems to be picking up speed. It is tucked behind this taller Phoenix roebellini and adjacent to the Porte cache over my driveway. Mostly shaded but enough filtered sun to keep it going. This location also helps to protect it from direct cold winds. My cyphophoenix elegans & Alba are both in pots so it’s hard to compare.

I've got a couple Bentickias that I ordered from Floribunda last year. Was planning on putting them in full shade this spring until I say Matt's post....

@doubravsky I'd suggest giving them some protection in your climate, but they definitely like heat/sun here in coastal OC. Let us know how they go! Such an amazing palm.

I’m 50 miles inland so I am putting mine in mostly shade under canopy of larger palms. 
If you are inland I highly doubt they can handle sun. I have Archontophoenix that get gallons of water a day and still get some sun burn so I wouldn’t trust a more sensitive crownshafted palm in full sun out here.

These were pics of the Bentinkia six months later (from July 2021) so not tons of growth but I’m happy to see it continuing to do well in my area. Will maybe go for the one year photo as well next month. I just really like the coloring so I felt like sharing.

Looking good.  I planted a one gallon Bentinkia condapanna in October of last year.  It's under some cheap shade cloth from HD but it's doing fine.  Thinking about removing the cloth.  The pictures are 11 months apart.

Here is an update on the Cyphophoenix nucele. It’s no longer protected from sun and is pretty exposed to Santa Ana’s when we get them. So not quite as lush looking. All in all though, not too bad. I believe this was planted in Spring 2017 as a small 5 gallon.

Looks good Greg. How ‘bout an update on the Bentinkia? Mine has been a great grower and starting to fatten up a bit. Little to no spotting at all and always seems to look perfect. It’s in an ideal location. Sun until afternoon, then shaded.

Well Greg, got a ways to go here. Finally picked up a C. nucele and planted about a month ago. We’ll see how it goes. Yours is looking very nice!

These are super fast here. I planted a 4" pot about the same size as yours in 2019. It is now about 12 ft high with 5 feet of clear trunk. Very nice color. Green, of course, but a nice shade. Because I keep it heavily mulched, the pigs have been relentlessly rototilling under it, but so far it doesn't seem to mind.

Thanks Rick, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I cleared out some stuff and it should have enough room. I’ll have to look back at the photos I took at your place a few months ago, I might have a picture of it.

Nice to see new plantings still happening at your place Tim. This will be a great addition to your already incredible garden. The fronds stay nice and upright so they don’t take up too much space.

It actually grows as a shrub and is called Bloodleaf (Iresine herbisii). I have lots of it in my garden.

What @Jim in Los Altos said. Cool plant and grows like crazy for me.  That was a tiny two leaf plant a few years ago.  I cut off a garbage can full every 6 months and it roars back with a vengeance.

Sadly not near as good as yours does. I can post a pic but it is not looking it’s best at the moment. It’s still chugging along though. I think a little too shaded.

Thanks Greg. Not too sure what the recipe for success is regarding mine. It’s pretty trouble free. A couple possibilities is sun exposure like previously stated and watering schedule. I verified today out of curiosity, this palm only gets 1G of water every 3 days via drip irrigation. I’m not a heavy waterer with my plants and everything seems to do well. I do fertilize via a Dosotron unit frequently though. I’d imagine that helps tremendously.
