Sabal ‘Lisa’

I bought a Sabal ‘Lisa’ seedling from Rod Anderson a week or so ago.  Fingers crossed it turns out to have the leaves I want.

Was wondering - should I plant it out now, or wait for temps to warm up?

Currently I drop to somewhere between 25F and 34F every morning, but am almost always above 70F for a daytime high.  None of my plants, including an Aloe marlothii and a Bismarckia, have shown even slight cold damage.

If this thing was any bigger, this wouldn’t be a question for me.  Just wanna make sure I don’t kill it or something.  Here’s a photo.  It’s the small one in the middle:

I'd keep it protected. You have plenty of pot for it. It will probably be fine either way.

I wouldn't put it out at that size, what's the harm in waiting 2 months?  Allow it to settle in over summer before it has to deal with winter.

I think that’s my big question mark.  Is it more stressful for a small plant with our summers (20-30 days of 110+) or our winters (25F-34F every morning)?

I’ll keep it in the pot for however long makes sense.  Just don’t wanna lose this thing in case it’s the real deal!!

Root establishment in our area is critical and the more time you can give something before the onslaught of our summers the better your chance of success.   With that said, here in chandler planting mid to late February is safe from most frost occurrences, not 100% but a lot less likely.  Sabals are tough especially out here, I would really consider where you want to place it, as they don't seem to transplant to easily, and whether or not it'll be subjected to reflected heat from a block wall.   Those should be the inputs driving your decision.

This one has survived 18F hard frost. It is 4-5 years old...very slow.20200907_123559.thumb.jpg.53611f62b0e9c454e542e2a9409bf789.jpg

When it gets cold it shouldn’t be a problem I don’t expect once the palm is bigger.  Probably not even when it’s small, just confirming.  Morning lows are brief and are almost never accompanied by frost.  30 nights below freezing this year and only one had any frost, and that was the day after a rain.  I have a Bismarckia with maybe 6”-12” of trunk and it has experienced no damage...

Maybe I will plant it out soon. I’ll wait for more responses on this thread before I make a decision.

God man... fingers crossed.  I hope it turns out to possess this leaf structure.

Ehh... plant it!  In the pot.. or be extremely careful and don't damage the roots.  Careful watering..Its almost spring where are.. if you put one of those ez-wall plant protecters.. you would be fine. Just my opinion..
