I found this old photo taken in January 2006 of one side of my house today.  Its funny how, over time, one forgets what things looked like, what was added, and how things may have changed overall.

I love Hyophorbes as well....certainly one of my favorites.  As such, Ive got them all over the yard in various sizes from little babies to decently sized ones.

Looks really good...The change was really drastic especially for a year and a half's time. Especially like the foxtails...and king palms?? One question, what did you do with the triple christmas palms??

Runty little $10 Bottle that I saved from the trash pile from a nursery!  It will likely never devlop into a beefy palm, but is cute enough as a "dainty" palm.

Yes....lots of Kings in there!

The Adonidias got yanked after one got LY and the two others got burned beyond help by my excessive Christmas decorations!

Oh, I think I read about that tragedy in some other post. Sorry to hear that. I think my plans for christmas decorations have just changed.

I think the triple spindles make a good replacement. LY infects spindles sometimes so hopefully you dont lose any of them. They're worth growing even if they are prone to LY.   Best of luck to ya!

Hey Larry, beautiful yard like always. You are lucky that the HOA has decided to let you plant away. I think I have just about maxed out what I can do on the sides and front of my house that will not attract too much attention from my HOA. What cold protection strategies do you have in mind for when the next real freeze is predicted? That is a lot of stuff to cover!

By the way, I have a lot of hyophorbes planted out too. None anywhere the size of yours though. How hard is it to get the leaf bases off those things? I have heard that they really need to be cut off when young but I am scared I would do some damage to the palms.

Is that the same royal in the Jan '06 pic as the one now?  The first one looks like it was placed farther back, plus that would be incredible growth, but I can't tell for sure.  Is that by any chance the royal you bought for cheap and planted this year?

Everything rides! In the future I am not really planning on doing much protecting except on a few certain items here and there.

Even then, Im not really worried unless its a very bad advective freeze.  And, then I guess I am not so worried anymore as the worst case means I just get to replant alot of stuff!   Its fun doing so, so no big deal.

Its very easy.

If they are cut while still a little soft its easier, but even if they are hardened off, its still pretty simple with a utility knife and or some garden snips.

Sharp eyes!

The Royal in the Jan 2006 pic was moved to a different location shortly after that pic was taken.  Its grown quite a bit since then and has some trunk, but is certainly not the size of the larger Royal in the July 2007 pic!  Its now part of a triple on the other side of the house.  You can just make them out in this pic.

Palms_38.jpg

The Royal I got cheaply a little while ago is a different one on the other side of the yard.  Its the one in the foreground in the pic below.

No problems at all.  There are no bylaws in the deed restrictions which are against planting something other than grass :P

I took Larry's advice on this and it was very easy.

The 15 gallon spindle that I bought a couple of years ago had accumulated a large amount of leaf base when I started to cut them off. They were next to impossible to cut. I thought I was actually doing damage to the palm when I was yanking away at those things. I revealed about 1/2 a foot of trunk when all was said and done. When the latest dying frond turned that awful orange black color, I cut it and the base off and it was much easier. However, my spindle, while very fat (and phat, BTW), only has a tan trunk....I love the whitish looking trunk on yours' Larry.
