Dioon Spinulosum Flush

Hello All,

I really appreciate all the help I've been given on this forum. I'd also would like to know if my Dioon Spinulosa is ready to flush? The fur make me think it is. Plus should I repot my guy or wait until the flush? I'm thinking a nice 10g because its in its 7g nursery pot I bought it in. Thank You!IMG_0849.thumb.jpg.fc40fac9b8afc68e211c0bebd48b12ed.jpgIMG_0850.thumb.jpg.19e64bcd86d0b17728331aadc8cf31d5.jpgIMG_0851.thumb.jpg.c27bee8ba9918cbbc10b5345cd7dbbba.jpg

It is probably working on it, but maybe not for a few weeks or not for a year.  It's hard to judge.  I have one in the ground that I have been waiting for a flush for 1.5 years now...  Stepping up to 10g is probably fine, it might delay the flush a bit.  But the current fronds look good, so new roots would be my priority if it were my plant.

I'm going to wait until May 19th. If by the 19th it doesn't flush I'll repot it. Maybe put it in the ground.

Pushing this back up

my Spinulosum Is flushing. Apparently it’s over 40 years according to the woman I purchased it from on FB marketplace. I planted in the ground about 2 years ago, it was super pot bound. It definitely suffered from sun exposure, but I’m hoping this newest flush is more sun tolerant.

Mine are in full sun with no issues, I’m sure your new flush will be sun tolerant and look great. I find D. Spinulosum to be one of the faster growing Dioon under the right conditions. Here’s one I planted about 20 years ago.

My several Spinulosum are also ok in full shade to full sun.  But that is in the swampland of Floriduh, and the humidity probably helps avoid sunburn.  I'd imagine that dry CA might make it more susceptible to sunburn without a bit of PM shade.

Inland areas maybe, closer to the coast? seen specimens growing in full sun w/ no burn.. Pretty sure those were getting watered regularly though, which probably helps keep the leaves from burning as easily..

Easy grow here and look great if placed under the high canopy of some native like Mesquite, Ironwood, TX Ebony, or Palo Verde that provides a bright shade break from the sun roughly 11AM - 5 or 6PM  this time of year...

Have one growing in almost full shade in Arizona. Tops always get twisted due to our extreme winds during flushing.🤷‍♂️
