Royal Developing a Bottle

JimR

Recommended Posts

My largest Roystonia regia (3 ft. of trunk, about 15 ft. overall, in the ground 2 years) seems to think it is a bottle palm.  The trunk at the base is getting really fat looking.  It is probably 2 ft. in diameter now.  Otherwise, the palm seems very healthy.  It looks like a bottle palm with a royal's crownshaft and fronds stuck on top.  I don't mind the look at all.  I am just wondering if I should be worried.  I will take a picture and post it.

Think of it like blowing up a long balloon. The initial shape is round, then as it pushes more trunk it becomes more of a column.

Let's call that Royal Jayne, as in:

"Hi, my name's Jayne Mansfield and I have this gloriously curvaceous figure . . . . "

In other words, your palm's not just going to town, but all the way to the center of the big city!

Pre- teen well fed Royals are gracious creatures here and their bottle looking trunk shape at this stage is always a focal point in the garden. They are not precocious flowering palms, I'd risk to say that the first fruits won't show up before 15 years or so and their growth speed increses by the time they complete their trunk diameter in the first couple meters.

Yes, but that buxom one wasn't lucky, as she lost her crown to a sudden bout of high speed vehicular crown rot, which converted her into a Beautia decapitata...

Sorry, Dave.  I couldn't resist the temptation.

I'm trying to vent a bit, since today I received a Rangiroa red dwarf coconut sprout that I've been waiting for, only to find tiny brown termites (I hope thats what they were) coming out of the husk.     I've never mixed up such a strong batch of Ortho Systemic and Daconil so fast in my life.  Got 'em all, I believe. ???  I soaked the nut, the packing material, and the box that it came in, then bagged it all up for disposal (minus the nut).  Scared the heck out of me!  If I see any more on the nut in the morning, the nut goes, too.

Looks about right for a Royal Jim.

If you feed it heavy and give it lots of water, it should grow fatter.

The one pictured below is one of the fattest juvenile Royals I have seen.  The base was over 42" in diameter!  My father is in the photo for scale.

Kris-

I love that name "Jamboo"!  You have now started me calling the Royals in my yard "Big Jamboos"!

I do not know how these Royals are fed, but there are a few dozen of them surrounding a parking lot and they are all very fat.

Dear Larry  :)

certainly it must be a beauty to look at.and when the leaves beacome old how do you clean it ? Manually or allow it fall as and when they dry-up ?

since these jamboos along with cocos nucifera bring down

heavy mass of dried leaves when it breezes...i have some

bitter experiences with these..Big Jamboos.

thanks & Love,

I do not know of any Royals that have been tried in SA.  Rockport is about 30 miles North up the coast from Corpus Christi.  There are only a handful of Royals in Rockport, but the oldest (and for a long time the only) one has been in the ground probably 10 years or more.
