Hey all,

I took a trip to Beaumont (California) yesterday to see a good friend yesterday. He started his garden 13 years ago. He's at about 3,000 ft elevation, so he gets some real summer heat and occasional mid 20's during the winter. So his palm choices need to endure a pretty broad range of temps. As such, he has tried a lot of great palms, with some great success. I've been waiting in vain for him to post his yard (he is a professional photographer after all) for the past several years. Boy, if you want something done...Anyway, I didn't have his address so I was hoping there would be some way of identifying the right house.

Now that he has canopy, even a Ravenea glauca seems happy after 3 years in ground

A couple Phoenix; one was a P. reclinada he purchased from a friend of mine, that is obviously a hybrid with (probably) canariensis. Big heavy trunks and suckers like crazy. The second is a likely datylifera that my neighbor dug out from a crack in the sidewalk a number of years ago. Brings a tear to my eye every time I visit it!

Last up, the coolest palm IMO in his yard. A Patrick Schaffer mail order hybrid Butia/ Syagrus hybrid crossed with Parajubea coccoides. Wow!

Look at the fuzz on that Butia/ Syagrus X Parajubea coccoides. Wow! I didn't know Patrick ever made that one.

Such a great garden! I drove past that garden a few years ago. I have friends that live near by there. I don't live far from there but the elevation is quite a bit higher. Honestly his garden doesn't look like it's in Beaumont.

Hey Bret, thanks for coming up this way. Great time on Saturday with the boys. To clarify,  the Patric Schafer hybrid...the one that you posted, is a Butia x Parajubaea cocoides purchased in 2009. It is the fastest growing palm in my garden. The other PS hybrid (not pictured) is a Butia Jubaea x Queen purchased the same year. Sorry for the confusion.

Great time on Saturday Randy, thanks for the tour.  After I posted the hybrid, I actually had doubt's if it was a triple hybrid or not. Thanks for clearing it up.. So, post the triple when you have a moment. And get a better picture than I have of your mule if possible. Mine does not do it justice!

Nice garden, fantastic specimens. Appropriate palms for the climate. Thanks for taking us along Bret.

Bret,

My elevation is actually 2612' contrary to what my profile says. Here is a picture of the B J x Queen from Patric.IMG_5268R.thumb.jpg.1874858413effeea96fd14db59c6069f.jpg
