Queen Palm repotting.

Hi Guys,

I have a queen palm that is couple years old, it’s 16ft or so, it has been living in 25 gal pot.

I have a feeling that I should upsize it to 40-50 gal …

I’m just worried that it will be wobbly in new pot any suggestions ?

thank you

Wow I had no idea they got that big only growing in pots. Its a possibility that it becomes a bit woobly in the beggining untill the roots spread out more in the new container. I would put it against a structure like your house put something between so it does not bend and find some way to tie or secure it to the wall of your house untill the roots are settled better in the pot.

I was going to ask why not put it in the ground but then I see you're in Ontario.

I would think the bigger pot would actually make it more stable than now once the roots grow into the fresh soil.

The real question is how many people will you need to transplant it over?  I would think one person alone will not be enough.

Thank you!

yes two people for sure as long as I have handles, it’s currently strapped by trunk to prevent wind messing with it :(

I just wasn’t sure if they rather to be little pot bound or like some space.

I’m having hard time finding nursery pots in Canada with handles in 50 gal size

Unfortunately I decided against it… as I took weight in to consideration.

this needs to go inside my house actually two very large palms each 25gal side by side

was worried about weight !

I would worry about weight of it to move wet soil + plant that’s some significant weight

Can we get a picture of  the full thing?

I second this. Interested to see how many fronds it actually holds.

I saw a youtuber in zone 6 who kept his 30ft queen palm in a pot, I’m not sure why he got rid of it.

That's actually very interesting way to store a tall palm, I've never thought of using the high area above the stairs to protect in the winter.

very neat!

I live in SC and I have 3 pretty large Queens in pots. Its still too cold here to take a chance with them for a full winter I think. They are all about 10-12 ft tall and now are all in 25 gallon pots. I store them in a large greenhouse that my wife and built last year. I use with heat lamps or propane on really cold nights to keep my baby warm. I move them with a dolly that I bought from Harbor Freight. With 2 people, it's pretty easy.
