It’s been a few yrs since my Hybrid Dypsis pembana X D madagascariensis ‘mahajanga’ set seeds and I am surprised by the resulting plants. At first glance I just thought they resembled D. pembana, but as I’ve gotten some to 1 and 3 gallon size I see a big difference. I’ve taken a few photos of both parents at 3 gallon sizes or larger, the regular pembanas have been planted. I was surprised to see so much of the ‘Mahajanga’ traits in the F2’s. First pics are the pembana and mahajanga. Last ones are the F2’s, Note the ‘spotted’ trunk and leaflets getting plumose, instead of being in single plane like regular pembana. First 2 pics, regular pembana. 3rd pic, regular ‘mahajanga’, last 3 pics F2’s. No heel like mahajanga.

Thanks for sharing! Did you sell seeds for these a few years ago on PT? If so, I have a bunch of seedlings going. I can't wait until they get to your size!

Hi Matt,

Yes, for 2 or 3 yrs! It’s exciting, I wasn’t expecting them to look like 50/50 hybrids themselves. Seeds on parent now, but un-ripe.

Any plans to do the cross again?

Oh, I Didn't Hybridize these myself, just happen to have both pembana and 'mahajanga' in the yard, they did the work. The results are plants from the Hybrids or F2's.

Cool!  So do they seed every year?

I think I might have one of your Dypsis pembana x madagascariensis 'Mahajanga' F2 hybrids.  I got it as a strap leaf seeding form @Fusca a few years back (2019 I think).  He said he it was a Dypsis pembana x madagascariensis F2 hybrid, possibly hybridized with a Dypsis madagascariensis 'Mahajanga' relative, and that he got the seeds from someone called NatureGirl on Palmtalk.  When I saw this post it jogged the memory.  It is one of my favorite potted pinnate palms.  It went pinnate early, like after only three or four strap leaves.

I guess this would considered be a Chrysalidocarpus pembanus x madagascariensis 'Mahajanga' F2 hybrid now...Phylogenomics and generic limits of Dypsidinae (Arecaceae),the largest palm radiation in Madagascar.
