A couple months back I received an order from Floribunda and in the packaging I found a loose seed hidden in the clumps of newspaper shreddings. I tossed it in a sort of catch all bag of germinating seeds and it sprouted! I tossed it in a 4” pot and the first leaf is reaching out of the pot (although sideways)

Just for fun any guesses what it is?

Too early to tell except it is an adjacent germinator, so I will hazard a guess that it is probably a small seeded pinnate palm.

Meg, hopefully I can keep it alive long enough to find out.
The flesh was all gone but the seed had a reddish tinge to it. It didn’t look like anything else Ive seen.

Archo fruit is red. Some Ptychospermas are red.

The first leaves from this seed seem to be coming out in 3 pairs with others following behind. Maybe its not a palm? The stem certainly looks palmy.

Very interesting.  I think it is a palm but not of any genus I've grown.

Could it be Dypsis leptocheilos?  First juvenile leaves open up pinnate and it's an adjacent germinator with a very similar looking seed.  Here is one of my seedlings germinated last year.

I have been growing simple bifid seedlings, which I thought were leptocheilos. Now I'm wondering if the are lastellianas.

Lastellianas look just like leptocheilos as newly germinated seedlings but the seed for lastelliana is much larger.

Yet another mystery it seems. Darn. I was excited to have some teddies or reds, from seeds I gathered under a tree withe reddish-brown crownshaft. Back to the principal mystery:

We'll see how that opens up.

Still growing, 2 leafs open and what looks like a 3rd forming on the outside? Closest to anything I have is Dypsis lastelliana but the mystery seedling looks less symmetrical.

I would guess Dypsis leptocheilos or lastelliana. Chamaedorea elegans also germinates pinnate leaves as do Rhopaloblaste spp (I think)

Meg, I think you're correct, Dypsis leptochelios is probably the one. I looked up the others you mentioned and Chamaedoria elegans looks very close too but the stems are very light colored in the pics I found. Same with lastelliana. The stem on this one is short and dark green with some spots. Maybe these traits vary though.

This guy is still chugging along. It looks considerably different from the D. lastelliana seedlings I have. There is quite a bit of tomentum showing up on the leaf bases. Does D. leptocheilos start to show tomentum earlier than lastelliana?

Very nice, I think it looks more like a howea then a dyspis.

Do Howea start out pinnate? I’ve never grown one. I think it looks pretty close to what fusca posted with the darker stem. I’m still leaning leptocheilos

I'm pretty sure Kentia do.

Seed all wrong for Howea.  Great mystery though.
