'A spectacular new palm species from the Sandaun province, Papua New Guinea'.

24 or more wedge-shaped leaflets forming a circle about 2.5 m (8 ft) in diameter, on a petiole of comparable length.

Lets hope someone has some seeds!!!

Cool palm, but aren't Tahina leaves bigger? These are 8ft (2.5m), while Tahina leaves can be 16ft (5m).

Nice..  I want seed.

I think they meant largest leaf within the genus maybe? It is a huge leaf blade compared to the petiole length.

Palmately-divided....different from Palmate? Is that the difference? Sorry, I sometimes miss obvious things.

Has any seed ever come available for this palm? Any specimens on display at a garden in the US?

I don't think so, my guess would be to try asking the Indonesian plant sellers of Facebook/Instagram. Preferably ones with contacts around Jayapura, which isn't too far from Sanduan Province on the PNG side - and so they might be able to find L. longispadix given it's range likely extends that far.

It should be fairly easy for them to identify, given it's enormous leaves and the inflorescences being 4.5m long.

This old thread brought to life , thank you . What a fantastic species from one of my favorite genus. My friends have been to Malaysia and sent me pictures of Licuala knowing I love them. They are so lush in that environment. Looking up through fractured light , seeing the translucent green leaves that seem to float on the very thin petiole , is like stained glass. Licuala in habitat …. yea , one of my favorites. I have only lived through photographs. Harry

So far every Indonesian plant seller on Facebook that I’ve chatted with is a lying sack of s@&%.
Especially the mapu sellers, who show seeds that aren’t even close to mapu. Anyone know a reliable one?

oh yeah I know, I've had trouble with some in the past. Make sure to check they've been in business for a few years so you know they're reputable, and you can message others who comment on their posts to see their experiences.

As for plant identification, it's really up to the buyer to identify most of the time because the sellers aren't very knowledgeable.

p.s remember to bargain for a good price deal haha

I just checked with a friend of mine, He recommends a seller called 'Rareforestplant' He's bought from many times with no issues, and apparently has collectors in New Guinea. So the seller can probably get L. longispadix.

I will probably try that route when I get around to it.

I took a look at the guy, on FB, in Indonesia, opened the account in 2017, last post 2022. Zero reviews, good or bad. You’d think something posted in the last 2 years, or even one review. I try some cheap seeds and let you all know the results.

I contacted “rare forest plant” on FB and tried something to buy something cheap and common in Indonesia, as a test, see how it goes. He quoted me $150 for (30) pigafetta seeds, plus $20 for a phyto and $80 for shipping($5 a seed plus mail). For context an average Indonesian makes under $100 a month or $4 a day. IMHO a ripoff artist at minimum, providing he actually ships the seeds, that they’re the correct species, they’re clean, and fresh. I pass on this guy.

For comparison, someone messages you from another country and wants (30) royals or sabals, palmettos, etc. you know there’s 3-4 trees in your neighborhood with tons of seeds laying on the ground. You tell him $4,000 for (30) seeds? And then get his $4,000(= to 1 month avg US salary) and laugh that you never even sent the (30) seeds, ha ha ha what a sucker? Really? Most people on this forum would offer the seeds for free.

haha yeah I know guess it depends how hard you can bargain lol. If the seed quality is good, then I suppose it's cheaper than going to New Guinea (only just).

If anyone else knows a cheaper source then I think we'd all love to hear it
