I found this species of licuala mapu, but it doesn’t look like licuala mattensis mapu based on both the leaves and the seed shape. Does anyone know what it is? Kinda worried it’s just a spray paint licuala

Wow that's pretty! More bodacious than any mapu I remember...

Looks very similar to the new mottled Licuala from Borneo. Does the fruit just peel off by hand leaving the seed? A bit like green avocado fruit but not soft. Was some seed for sale recently

I need some of that new palm!

Quite a spectacular little palm and the seed couldn’t be anymore different than L. mattenansis var. paucisecta. (‘ mapu’)

Glad you chimed in Steve, I figured if anyone might have a clue, it might be you.

I wasn’t even sure if was real or not for a bit.

I think Jeff at florabunda just got a few of these. The seed is way bigger than most licuala and way way different than mapu. I am supper excited to see what this palm has to offer

Wishing I had more over-story for this one..., my mauka neighbor would NOT be happy if I ever lost my restraint pertaining to pruning habits. ^_^ That is a beautiful beautiful palm.  How big is it? overall height? Leaf diameter?

Well the price of seed dropped so jumped in and ordered 20. Fingers crossed

:bemused: Do need!!

Any info on its discovery? Curious to learn more about it new species.

Naples (inland), FL - technically 10a but more like 9b in the winter :hmm:

Hmm info is sparse.  This has not been described scientifically but "found" by plant collectors.

The local people are doing the collecting and earning good $ for that so they are seeing the value.

There are more seeds of different new stuff coming to market now.

I'm lucky to count as a friend someone involved in this. The joy of wild collecting is you meet fellow fixated people.

As for locality the best I have is near the Kalimantan Sarawak border.

I'm missing my jungle adventures

Certainly resembles Licuala mattenensis var. Mapu. But seed of this one in the picture are round, completely different from Mapus.

I got mine but they were all rotten and crumbled under slight finger pressure. See pic.

Let’s all post pics to get a better overview!

my second order from a another supplier looks completely different. It’s pink and I think I’ve been scammed again.

If you are trying to buy seeds of "mapu" then neither are correct. First photos you posted are of the new undescribed Licuala from Borneo.

The person I'm getting the seed from is a friend based in Thailand. I'm 100% confident on what I'll be getting and it's freshness.

I’m trying to find a reliable supplier of Mapu and that Borneo palm. If you comfortable to share the details I’d be very grateful for a referral.
