Queen Palms AZ

Can it be done?!

Nearly every queen palm in AZ looks like garbage. I planted one with the expectation it will be my most finnicky palm that requires the most care.  $45 at Home Depot.

There’s one dude here in town that has a clump of three of them, and they look absolutely fantastic.  Hoping I can do that with mine.  Probably the only ones I’ve ever seen here in my life that don’t look horrible.

Would feel like something of an accomplishment to have one of two queens in AZ I’m aware of that actually look good.

Lots of water. (Especially in AZ!)
Lots of fertilizer.

In Florida, I often see them suffering from manganese deficiencies. Also, potassium deficiencies. I am not familiar with AZ soil.

@ahosey01 so you've warmed up to queens I see :shaka-2:

Good luck with it, hopefully it ends up being a looker like the ones you posted. I can't seem to water mine enough and we've gotten a ton of rain this summer

Only after passing the three in my photo.  Then I ate all my words.  lol

Ive seen a few in Phoenix that are pretty nice, minimal sunburn and yellowing.

Arcadia,

though untrimmed, the living fronds are mostly strong green, also one of the tallest queens I saw, (and the fullest canopy)

Of course for every one of these there are over 100 like these.

@ahosey01 might be worth seeing if the homeowner of those gorgeous queens would talk with you about them. He could be helpful but then again he might tell you to piss off haha

I wouldn’t waste your time, money, effort, dirt, and space on a queen palm in Arizona. In my opinion, a Arizona Queen is one of the ugliest palms there is, plus you’ll be paying lots per year on the trimming and eventually pay for someone to just cut it down. BUT if you must, I would treat it as if your planting a Royal. Plant in a spot in full/part shade or a place where it’ll be protected from the western sun (especially if it’s young) and also water the heck out of it. With that being said, if your going to treat it as a Royal minus we’ll buy and care for a Royal? Hope that helps!!
