Bottle Palm Seed...

Butch

Recommended Posts

I have a a bottle palm (Hyophorbe lagenicaulis) in a pot on my drive way for a number of years, here in SO. CA... It 1st started putting out seed in 2019, and doing more ever since... They seem to take forever to develop, and I don't know when they are ripe... They get to the size of a small olive, and turn from green to black very slowly... The 1st bunch fell off slowly, but the newer bunch seem to be hanging on the tree longer.. Can any one tell me when they should be ripe, or do I wait until they just drop, and try doing something with them then?... I assume that black is the color of the final stage of ripeness... No red or anything like that?... And once ripe, how long to germinate?  The seeds are smaller than they look in the pics... Less than 1" long....Thanks for any help...

Well, I found most of my answers at "Palmpedia" http://www.palmpedia.net/wiki/Hyophorbe_lagenicaulis  ... I guess I should have looked there before posting, but I do like discussing palm related items here ... It seems the seeds are about right, as far as color and size... They take about 6 months to germinate... But, does anyone know if I should pick them when they turn black, or just wait for them to drop?... Come on guys, talk to the "Redheaded step-child" here :winkie:...

They take a really long time. They also sprout really easily, just wait till they start dropping.

I had them stay green over a year then abort. Never had a bottle palm seed mature and ripen. Now I cut off inflorescences before they bloom

You can't tell by the pic, but there are two separate seed bunches there, one fresh and green, and some underneath almost entirely black, and hopefully ripe(and viable) ..
