Florida Winter 2021-2022

This period could bring the coldest temps of the winter to FL. 

 

 

The way this would work if it happened is that the low pressure/trough that would dip down into N. FL and then ride up the East Coast (pictured below) would pull the cold, arctic air from the north straight down toward FL in its wake.

10:37pm and these are the temps already. Weather station in my yard says 31! Dropping steadily- it was 34 just about an hour before. Weather channel just updated to say the low tonight is only 28  (previously was 27). I predict it will get to about 25 here.

Funny enough, its 36F here, which is 2F higher than surrounding stations. Gonna move the sensor further away from the house to see what happens (likely gonna get moved into the tangerine tree again lol)

Still expecting 26F tonight here, there is a lot of room for error, Brewton AL is expected to hit around 21F. If cooling processes speed up ahead of forecast, could definitely go lower than 26F here. Frost already forming on some surfaces in the backyard.

Sensors in the yard recorded lows ranging from 44F-47F.  I'm sure the coconuts appreciated the extra 3F.  Supposed to be 32F-34F tomorrow morning, depending on the forecast.  Figuring there will be frost in the area since Bartow already had frost on the roof topsat 39F last week.

32-34f? The forecast is for 36f here and you’re normally a little warmer than here.

Bottomed out at 27 here. Still 31 right now, so it has been a pretty good duration of below freezing. Very heavy frost. Yard really took a hit now. The annuals and other tropicals that had been holding on were finally thoroughly zapped. Almost wonder if it got colder in other parts of the yard since my big Philodendron Selloum's leaves are drooping toward the ground (usually happened in the past with lows at least in the mid 20's).

Yeah, the Weather Channel is forecasting 32F and NWS is forecasting 34F.  Must just be our turn in the barrel.

We'll see what we end up getting.  Either way, can't really complain as 32F is still above our average annual low technically.  I was just at Lake Wire and it was 43F with a stiff north wind.  At least it is still and a few degrees higher here back at home.  The temperature started to go up once I got to the Lake Hollingsworth area.  You can see the slight transition in temperature from NW Lakeland to SE Lakeland play out on the map.

Had a low of 22.6F in the backyard lastnight. When i said there was room for error in the forecast, i guess that came true. The majesty that i put a sheet over to protect from frost, all of its fronds have collapsed to some extent. There is still green on it, but it took the fronds over a week to show the true damage from the last time we dropped into the 20's. Everything else appears to be doing alright this morning.
I protected the foxtail, the bismarckia seedling, the majesty, and the pygmy date out front which has burn from the last dip into the 20's. The majesty was the only without added heat, the extension cords wont reach to that side of the house.

NWS has 38F and frost advisory for my area for tomorrow morning. We will see what happens. No plans to protect anything. Most stuff is too big and on its own at this point.

I still have 36f forecast for tomorrow morning, but now I see 34f forecasted for next Sunday. That one is worth keeping an eye on.

Exactly 0.0C/32F for me last night.  Looks like another freezing night again next Friday with a low of 31F predicted currently.  Really hoping we'll trend warmer as we get closer to it and not potentially even colder. February can't get here soon enough.

So far no damages in my yard other than to some out in the open Banana plants.  But that's not all from last night's freeze. Had a low of 32.4F one night about a week ago as well. The ones under Pines look perfect.  Elephant Ears still look fine. No change to my  A. Merillii and still looks pretty decent.  My Mango tree looks great.  And my Guava trees still have a few late Guavas on them. 

In other words, so far so good. We'll see what next Friday night brings.

Trending down a bit for me, seeing a range from 38 - 42F for barrier island in Brevard. NW winds at 5mph should prevent frost along the coast. (Per the NWS) 

In years past, I’ve lost potted palms with temps in the 35-40F range. Make sure to protect those potted plants even if frost or freeze is not forecast. Pots, especially plastic nursery, offer little or no insulation for the roots.

I hit 46.0 last night which is 2 deg. below the last forecast I saw. The forecast is holding at 38 for tomorrow am. I’ll be dragging a lot of leaf babies into the garage tonight just in case. I think everything I have in the ground should be okay.. I hope.

My forecast is also trending downward and I have a frost advisory.  The NWS is predicting 38F tomorrow morning.

Right around 50F here as of 3pm and in the way down to 34F at my location, urban Orlando should stay mostly in the upper 30s.

The forecasted pattern over next couple weeks could lead to a widespread freeze in the Orlando, Lakeland, Tampa area.  So, keep a close eye on the weather forecast Floridians.

I screen grabbed this temperature graphic at 4:09 p.m. There is a colder area in north central Florida that is colder than points north -- to include Georgia and Alabama. I'm getting reports of 34 degrees for Lake Placid tomorrow morning. It's been overcast all day, not a ray of direct sun. I've been monitoring my outside temperature and it hasn't risen above 51 degrees all day. It's 50 degrees as I write this at 4:32 p.m.

Currently ~51F at my location and 48F at the airport.  A few places won't make it out of the 40s.  The wind is out of the direct north.  Forecast is 32F-33F for the Lakeland airport (KLAL) with a frost advisory as NWS has gone down a degree.  Bartow (KBOW) is forecast to hit 34F and Winter Haven (KGIF) is forecast to hit 36F.  Orlando Executive (KORL) is forecast to hit 35F and Orlando International (KMCO) is forecast to hit 34F.  Tampa (KTPA) is forecast to hit 39F.

Could be the coldest night coming here, so far... Stage 2 and 3 of bringing stuff inside. It was 56ºF at 3 pm with a slight breeze, got some cloud cover at the moment. Not sure how cold it will get, the local forecasts have been iffy lately.

It was 70ºF inside the garage before opening it to bring in more stuff. About 20 minutes later I closed the garage and it was 62ºF inside...

I got up to 59F today with little to no sun.  My forecast is holding at 39F.  I'm bringing my royal seedlings in just in case.

Looks like Miami Beach will get down to the upper 40s tonight for sure. A few years ago in the winter of 2016-17, Miami had no nights below 50. 

It's hard to see on this chart, because early 2016 and late 2017 had upper 40s, so the no sub 50 winter is hidden just like a warm overnight low is overlooked when going by 24 hour lows.

My yard temperature has been holding at 49 degrees now for several hours. I can only attribute it to total overcast. IMO, the only way it's going to drop to the forecasted 34 (now it's been changed to 33) degrees is if the sky clears up and I have radiational cooling. Normally, after sundown my temperature would drop like a rock, then slow down later on in the night.

It cleared out sometime around 5PM here.  Nothing but stars in the sky.  Hope you keep some cloud cover down that way.

It's not looking good for north central Florida.

Sky cleared here in Coastal Volusia near Ponce Inlet. Temp has dropped like a rock. 43 currently At 830pm. We hit 59 for a high

I haven't been outside (getting ready to) but the sky must have cleared because at 8:00 p.m. it was 48 degrees, now it's 44 degrees at 8:46 p.m.

All is good so far, i havent checked on the Foxtail, but technically if a 10F temp difference was held overnight inside the wrap, then the plant experienced freezing or near freezing temps. This cold also felt different. It didnt feel that cold to me, might have something to do with just how dry the air was.

Looking good! All the tropicals up here went bye bye the first time we had a freeze into the 20's. I would have to agree, hoping things dont trend much further down or i may have to protect the Queens just be more safe than sorry. They had no protection lastnight, even though i thought about doing it anyways. NWS is forecasting 26F for Friday night then 28F for Saturday night here.

Forecast is showing 30F for tonight, however its already 39F. Temps are cooling faster than expected, just like lastnight. There doesnt seem to be much room for error with tonights forecast, only a 1F temperature difference is forecast between here and Brewton AL compared to lastnights 5F difference. Ill be watching the temperature over the next few hours.

It really pays to be on a barrier island tonight. Even Clearwater Beach is still at 50f while mainland Sarasota and Venice are in the mid to low 40s.

After 24 years living here, I realize I must be in the coldest part of Highlands County. I say that as I always thought Archbold Biological Station (10 mile south of me) was. But today I'm running 6 degrees colder at 3:00 a.m. Up in town at the Lake Placid Elementary School (that has a STEM weather station tied into Weather underground's network is running 10 degrees warmer than at my place.  And this in no fluke as I've been comparing my low temperatures every morning this winter. Up in town is 70 feet higher in elevation than at my place, and I know from years past that would make at least 7 degrees difference (warmer) than at my place. 

I have three digital thermometers. One is in a Stevenson screen.  The other is tied inside a firebush. The other is hand held.  The one in the Stevenson screen is giving me my lowest reading. The sensor in my firebush (hanging from a limb) is the reading being displayed in the below photos. Its reading 31 degrees. It just ticked back up to 32 degrees. It's now 3:46 a.m. EST as I write this

36F to 38F clustered around me at 6:52AM. Has been at that temp since at least 5:00AM when I woke up for work. No frozen dew or frost on the car windshields or tops, grass or palms in the front or back of my house. May have formed since I left for work though at 5:20AM…
