After pulling some weeds from around these Cycads I decided to snap a few pictures to share with you.  BTW weeding around many of the cycads can result in getting some pokes and scratches on the hands and arms despite being careful.  Here are six of them . . .

#1  Ceratozamia miqueliana  1.3m / 4.5 ft tall

post-90-1187322569_thumb.jpg

Hawaii Island (Big Island), leeward coast, 19 degrees N. latitude, south Kona mauka at approx. 380m (1,250 ft.) and about 1.6 km (1-mile) upslope from ocean.

No record of a hurricane passing over this island (yet!).

Summer maximum rainfall - variable averaging 900-1150mm (35-45") - Perfect drainage on black volcanic rocky soil.

Nice sunsets!

Al,

Great looking cycads! I have a E. whitelockii that's about the same size as yours - maybe from the same seed batch? I bought mine from Michael Au in June 2000 (barerooted, but it was about a 5G size). Where did you get yours?

Here is a pic of my Encephalartos Whitelockii. It is an old plant and the plant tag said "SP. lake george" when I bought it. The outer fronds flushed during our cold snap so they got a little beat up.

Love those Kisambos.  Al, your Macrozamia is a beauty too.

Kris, check out some pictures of mature Macrozamia moorei, very easily confused with Phoenix canariensis from a distance.  Here is a smaller one in the glasshouse at The Royal Horticultural Society, Wisley.

This is another one of my favorite cycads, Ceratozamia 'Molongo'.  The caudex now measures 40cm / 16" wide and tall and the width of the leaves spread is about 2.4m / 8ft.  This picture was taken after it had gotten a fairly new flush of growth . . .

When I got this cycad about 11 years ago it was a very tiny plant in a one gallon pot with only a couple small leaves.  I was told it was an unknown wide leaf type Ceratozamia spieces from Mexico.  It's definately a small grower because it still only measures 71cm / 28" tall but spreads out to 1.2m / 4ft wide.  It recently just sent out a new flush of growth and here's what it looks like now.

Any Cycad people out there have any idea as to what species this might be?

This is Zamia inermis that I grew from a tiny one leaf seedling from Loren Whitelock, a SoCal Cycad specialist.  Thirteen years ago he told me it was likely close to being extinct in habitat.  I like this cycad a lot and am happy to have ione.  It is a female plant.
