The water temps got crushed over here with the cold fronts. Clearwater Beach was showing ~62F yesterday.

I think the water in the Keys and SE Florida is holding ~70F.

Cristobal,The Palm Beach Inlet is reported as 70F Feb 7,2009. On Thursday morning(Feb.5,2009),I talked to the Head Lifeguard at mid-town beach. He meticulously takes air and Ocean temperatures at 6:30 AM. He told me that Ocean was 71F and air 41F on Feb.5,2009. Our airport reported a low of 33F(it is always the coldest spot).Interestingly,Pahokee reported 37F on the shores of Lake O as it's low on Feb.5,2009.

Santa Monica bay to San Diego bay report water temps between 58F-63F\ 14-17C  and why nobody but the hardiest swim in the ocean this time of year. An insight into the SoCal climate is the cold Japanese current that is weakly off-set by a warmer counter current. Ocean temps certainly retard beach side gardens of spring warmth & prolong winter's ill-effects on palms.

few persons live by the gulf of california. theres nothing there, less the little towns san felipe, loreto, mulege, santa rosalia in baja california and puerto peñasco, guaymas in sonora. in la paz theres only 150,000 persons and much less in guaymas.

this part of méxico is very hard place to live, bad hot climate and bad economy. to get good informations for this area about the temperatures of the ocean, need to get the informations from the u.s. satellites.

for another year. Learned from our bay fishing guide the other day that just a few

days of rain water runoff can cut the water temp by as much as 5 degrees in only

a day or two.

I wait to see what is to happen with el niño. then the water temperatures in the east pacific are very interesting.

I remember in the last el niño ocean temperature of 21 C - 70 F in january and they fish in this month marlin and dorado in ensenada. in normal years they fish them in april - november.

Isn't 72F a bit warm for San Diego? Is this because of the developing el niño? There is still time for it to get warmer?

72 - 74 F is normal for san diego in july, august, september.

in a year of strong el niño the temperatures of the ocean in summer by san diego can go to 78 - 80F. this can be dangerous, for if a tropical storm or hurricane goes north it can go with the strength to this area.

dont think a hurricane cant happen in southern california !

read this about hurricane linda 1997 (category 5-6):

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/elnino/dispat...atch980211.html

read this about more then 40 tropical storms afecting southern california 1902 - 1998:

http://www.usatoday.com/weather/whhcalif.htm

read this about san diego hurricane in 1858, the most worse storm in history of san diego:

http://www.aoml.noaa.gov/hrd/Landsea/chenowethlandsea.pdf

******************************************************************************

in this spring the east pacific is very cold, now the temperatures are normal.

we see what happen with el niño now - the more warmer water always start in the south in a year of el niño, then goes north. it is to be interesting in these months to see if the east pacific becomes very warm.

the best image to see this, is the image i post of baja california and the ocean temperatures. you always see the more warmer water start go north by the coast of baja california to california usa.

The warmer ocean of SoCal is, in part, the eddy pulling up water off the Mexico coast. It starts in San Diego & moves up the coastline. But once you get past Pt Concepcion, the cold Japanese current plunges the sea temp. I know, since I regularly swam in the frigid Pacific at Santa Cruz as a kid.
