I'd say there's no conclusive information on this but, based on the long history of Palmtalk 'hardiest livistona' - topics, the Nitida would be a tad bit hardier (solid 9a, dicey 8b).

Thank You, Swolte.  I was surprise how tall/big they can get.

I have a Decora going through its 2nd winter in the ground here in Myrtle. @Laaz lost his to the 2018 storm in Charleston; you guys will be sure to get updates from me and mine along the way

Do you have pics I would love to see

@WhoDatNation i can take some tomorrow and throw them up.

I have some in this thread but I can't remember how recent they are -

Here is my nitida before the freeze in February took it out with 9° F.  Two years from a strap-leaf liner it was one of my fastest growers.  I replaced it with a decora I grew from seed.

I was also under the impression nitida was the toughest. Mine is going through its second winter. Last year it took the ice storm unprotected and saw 24F. The top half of an emerging frond took damage but that was it. Right now it’s buried in snow and we'll see if it makes it through this awful weather.

Every Decora here in Charleston was killed in that 2018 freeze. None of the Chinensis were fazed.

Forgot to mention that I have a decora and nitida near Harlingen, TX that made it through 22° F unprotected in February.

Decora seem to be fine down to about 20F. In 2018 we dropped to 16F & didn't get much above freezing for over a week.

@Laaz good ! I will be planting both late February if the temps are looking good it hasn’t gotten below 29 here and we’re almost in January

Nitida has been hardier and faster growing than decora for me in San Marcos, TX z8b.  Both are awesome palms- the more water, the better.  I had a nitida that grew from a 5G plant to 7’ of trunk in four years before being taken out by the historic Feb freeze- smaller nitidas survived.

Just moved from San Antonio to the RGV this past week.  Here are the palms mentioned above:

Not exactly :) I already dug and transplanted 4 palms and plan to move some more in the coming weeks.  What I leave behind are well established for the future tenants to take care of.  The ones here need some TLC as you can see from the pics.  Not cold damage on the decora - it's wind damage/lack of water.  But zone 10a opens up more palm options!  I planted a Carpentaria today.

Congrats Jon so does that mean your officially retired ? Sorry again I missed your visit maybe I'll have to make it out your way to the RGV for some nursery hopping. I'll bring some seedlings with me too.

I'm officially unofficially retired!  I'm still hoping to land a remote position since the majority of what I have applied to are remote.  And yes, you're welcome to come visit anytime!  :)

Thanks Clay!  I've been meaning to call/text but I'm still getting settled in.  After the spring break crowds are done I'll be ready for a visit!  :D

I see you wasted no time putting that "10a" moniker on Palmtalk profile.  Nice looking grass by the way.
