What's going on with this Butia?

So, these two Butia seemingly died last year after palmageddon. However, these sprouts have been on their trunks for months now. What are they? Could they be? They look a lot like strap leaves for palms. Or are they just grass or something.

I agree they look like palm strap leaves.

Look like strap leaves of ..something..  to me as well. Can't think of a grass, that would've survived the kind of cold you saw last year, that would have pleated blades.  Hopefully you got lucky and those are new Butia to carefully extract and replant.

They seem to be palm seedlings but of what? Who knows? The plant doesn’t look like it was very tall when it died. Did it even have seeds on it to fall in the boots? If not, then they could have come from bird droppings.

Looks like a cutoff inflorescence stem at the arrow.  The seedlings look very much like Butia seedlings , and they do have a big tendency to sprout in the boots .

As others have said, those are seeds that germinated in the boot straps of the palm.  You should be able to remove them gently and pot them up.

Yeah, it was fruiting.

It’s very common for the seeds to germinate in the boots. You see it on all the trunking Houston area Butia which aren’t excessively cleaned up.

As several others have mentioned these are baby Butia seedlings that germinated in the old leaf boots.  Remember when I suggested that you should look for these rather than try to germinate seeds yourself?  Post #11.  Saves a lot of time.  :greenthumb:  One Butia odorata currently in my yard came from such a seedling that I pulled out of an old leaf boot and I have a Butia catarinensis seedling that I rescued the same way from a tree in Florida.

Extremely common, pull gently near the base of the strap. They should slide out.  Pot them up if you wish. Continue the cycle!
