Greetings all! Would love your help in identifying these Calathea’s… The larger one in the back with the more gray leaves were sold to me as a Calathea Setosa.

Then I just purchased the smaller,  younger one… pictured in th e foreground of the photo.

It too , was tagged as a  Calathea Setosa.

Is that a juvenile form with the darker stripes and coloration?

Or do you think they are  two different Calathea’s ?

Any  and all help would be very much appreciated!

thanks!

Hi,

your calatheas are now classified as Ctenanthe. There are two Ctenanthe quite similar, C. setosa, which could be the bigger one, and C. oppenheimiana, the other one. But if yoy search Google for these two species, you will find them both mixed under the two names. Most of the sites that are listing them are commercial vendors and they simply do not bother to classify them correctly. I still cannot find any serious and defitive distinction. There are also some varieties within the species.

I like all the Ctenanthes that are available, they are much hardier than the Calatheas, can take temperatures down to 0°C

There is a very good article online, I am convinced the guy knows well what he is saying. Please scroll down to where the Author answers to "Ian"s question about C. setosa and oppenheimiana.

To avoid any confusion, please note that the Ctenanthe oppenheimiana Tricolor is different from Stromanthe Triostar, which is a completely different genus
