I was seeing online that some people are making a potting mix for Aroids and adding in acacia leaves…mostly recipes with mixtures of coco coir/ coco bark , perlite / pumice, some had orchid mix, charcoal, and some included a little potting mix  etcetc… they varied … It was a well draining mix—-for a semi- epiphytic potting type medium… SOME included “Acacia Leaves”!?

when I looked that up it said it might be beneficial… Don’t know if they’re just promoting something to sell?

Anyhow , that being the case , living in Florida and having huge live oak trees , especially this time of year we are sweeping up tons of the leaves! I use them in composting but also on my paths around the garden.

Seeing  this information with the acacia leaves addition to the potting medium for Aroids, made me think ….I wonder if that would be a good additive to the potting medium for Aroids?

I realize that it would just turn to leaf mold,  which is me a good thing , however , is there any really added benefit other than just decomposing leaves?

Any and all ideas/advice/thoughts…?

thanks in advance!

Acacia ..or leaves from many types of Legumes add Nitrogen to the soil when they are shed since plants in the family fix N at the roots... I spread collected Mesquite leaves for the same purpose here around some potted things..  Definitely helps ..and keeps me  from having to waste money on harmful chemical ferts. containing N.
