I can't find Radicalis anywhere online. My local Lowes has the less hardy varities that are just labeled "Cat Palm". But I'd love to try a Radicalis outside in my zone 7b/8a garden. Just can't find them anywhere except for Jungle Music, which has the trunking variety. I've read the trunking form is less hardy so I'll need the non-trunking form. Anyone know where I can purchase some of these?

I have some arborescent form seedlings.  I bought some from Jeff Marcus at Floribunda and I grew some from seed.  They're easy germinators.  I just started an etsy page following our exchange, and I may decide to sell some of mine.

Oh and they come up for sale here on PT sometimes.  I also got some from @Darold Petty

I think Matt at Wanderlust said he had some when I was there in dec but not 100% sure, worth an ask.

Looking for seed myself, especially the short form. About 100 to 200.

Originally, 15-20 years ago I thought these were suppose to be clumping palms, I don't think they are, unless there are some hybrids out there. But that Is what I would wish for.

Current Texas Gardening Zone 9a, Mean (1999-2024): 22F Low/104F High. Yearly Precipitation 39.17 inches.

I’ve read the shrubby type are hardier than the trunking variety. But if they’re all basically trunking, I’m confused. There’s so much conflicting info online. It’s really difficult to know what’s what

Either of you try sending a personal message to @DoomsDave  Thought he has both forms, and has passed around oodles of seed off his specimens in the past.

His epic thread in the " freebies " section..

Any palm labeled " Cat " palm is likely referring to Chamaedorea cateractum,   which is entirely different from  C. radicalis..

An excellent thread about C. radicalis ..and both forms of it put together by the late Dick Douglas some time ago..

Yep, here's My batch grown from DD. Going on 1 year now, going to split em up into more pots soon. Just soaked em for a day, community pot and put them on a heat pad. They sulked for a bit but when temperatures started climbing they started popping. Excellent germination rate. DD had mentioned both forms could be in there so I'm waiting to see.

They are single trunked, but would be fine for successive group plantings. Radicalis and microspadix will hybridize, but we need more info on growth characteristics.

That's on my list of experiments to tinker with, years from now.  I don't know if any of my Chamaedorea will ever set seed here but I'm hopeful.  A suckering radicalis hybrid would be the bee's knees.  And microspadix is just a beautiful palm, I just wish it was a little more hardy.

@Steve Machas produced hybrid offspring from his plants.

chamaedorea that clumped like microspadix with the foliage and sun tolerance of radicalis would be awesome

All of my various palms are years away from fruiting, but I do intend to experiment with hybridizing. Chamaedorea appear relatively precocious, so the genus is ripe for experimentation. From my very limited research, not all Chamaedorea will cross, but Florida growers should have a great opportunity for experimentation.

I have a number of each planted next to each other and they flower almost constantly. I haven't gotten any seeds from any of them as of yet but perhaps this season I'll give nature a helping hand

@knikfar if I ever get any seeds from my plants I'd be happy to send you some. Cold tested to 19F and covered in ice. I may have some microspadix this year as well if you're interested

Thank you so much! I'll take whatever anyone is willing to give me. And that will, hopefully, survive in my Raleigh yard.

I wish I'd seen this earlier. I already ordered some seed off Ebay. Are you planning on selling any of the plants themselves?

Absolutely, I'll keep you in the loop moving into the growing season. I have the arborescent form but I think you'll be happier with it in the long run.

I do! I haven't posted them for sale on the site yet, but they're in 4" square pots at the moment, just little guys. I'll get around to listing them just as soon as I can get around to doing some inventory...

Not sure this is helpful now since I think I just got his last one, but I just got a second (non trunking) specimen from Phil at Jungle Music (https://www.junglemusic.net/). The website is a bit of a gauntlet, but the service is fantastic once you get to emailing/calling Phil.  Earlier this year he sent me an even larger one, which I put in the ground last Nov.  Sure wish I had taken his advice and waited to plant that one since we had a disastrous cold snap in Seattle and it took on major leaf damage, but new growth is emerging! Going to wait to put my new one in the ground a few more weeks.
