New Jubaea chilensis 15 gallon....

Not cheap, but hopefully worth it!   Just got it home from the nursery.   Here's hoping for big things (eventually lol) from this one!

Yay! What a beautiful Jubaea! Will you grow it in a pot or plant it in the ground?

Looks great!  Which nursery?  They grow very fast for me here in the PNW.  This is less than two years growth in my front yard.  I got mine from Raintree.

Y'all's grandchildren better appreciate it! They can take 50-60 years to flower. Woof!

Nice to hear!   I got mine from OregonPalms, had same size as Raintree for better price-- but I got one of the last 2 he had at 15 gallons.  Sounds like he may not re-stock as he said 'they don't sell well".   Hmmm, wonder why lol.  They ARE spendy, due to slow growth rates at the nurseries when very young.   The nursery estimated my plant is 8-10 years old.   Dunno, but if so, that IS slow.   Heard that they do speed up once they get past baby-hood, so your plant gives me hope.   :-)

@Fallen Munk  what type of bamboo is that?  I assume it's a clumping (not running) variety.  Love those big canes!  Did you have to trim them up to show off the main stems like that?   Beautiful palm btw.... now I've got WinePalm envy!

Last time I was there, his prices were double that of Raintree for smaller Jubaea.  I only paid $150 from Raintree and Oregon Palms had their 15 gallon for $300.

Thanks!  That's Vivax that I got from that farm in Albany.  In a few years those canes will be 3" to 4" diameter.  I clean off all the low growth when they first shoot because it's easier to just use a fingernail than it is to try to prune it off later.  If you don't catch it in new growth, you use a block of wood and bash it off.  If you use pruners it leaves ugly nubbins.

Wow wish I could have caught Raintree back then lol...   they quoted me $450+ for 15 gallon a couple days ago;  Oregon Palms still at $300....so there ya go.   Raintree did have some smaller ones (5 gal?) for about $150 I think, but given their slow growth, figured I'd go 15 gal.

Looks like a great deal to me!  I contemplated getting a 24" box this weekend from a much maligned nursery in Austin.  They play pricing games so it was listed a $2,000 but they'd sale for $200 off.  When I went to  their office and decided to come home with a CIDP instead I ultimately paid half of the "sale price".  So in the end, best case scenario I probably could have gotten the Jubeae for $1,000 but didn't want to pay that much, although now I have no idea where else in TX I can get one that size.  I've now filled the space but would still love to find one even if it means moving stuff around again.

I bought mine for $500 and spent about $1,300 moving it.  My guess its a 48in box size and would run for around $4000

I ended up paying $500 for the CIDP.  Looks like yours is at least twice the trunk size of mine.  I did have to buy a dolley to move it from the front to backyard but was at least able to plant myself.  I was able to move a 24" mule myself a few monhts ago but this one was definitely a lot heavier.  It was dark by the time I finished planting it today so I'm hoping when I go out tomorrow it's not leaning or planted too shallow!  You definitely were better prepared for the planting process than me!

Unfortunately mine has a little lean and I didn't notice it until I backfilled.  Only way to fix it would be to dig out one side and push it over.  I'm ok with it.

You can see it below it goes to the left.

When you were there did you happen to see the 24” box jubaea? I just left them a message about getting a couple pics of those. If I were to drive down for one I’d need to see them first.

I put in a new Jubaea this year and have another couple in the greenhouse. Also will plant my Parajubaea Torallyi . Put in one of my two Brahea Edulis and a new Medjool female offshoot. A gopher got to one of the Jubaea I had in the ground so I have begun putting in 5x5 by three foot deep wire cages. You can see the size of the planting hole in the last picture.

Darn I didn't get pics of them, pretty sure he has some remaining though.   I remember now you'd mentioned those awhile back.  sorry i didn't get pics.  They're of course larger than the one I bought, not monstrous but 50% bigger I think.  If I were you, I'd call and see if he can snap a cell phone pic or two, and email to you, I bet he would if it meant a $500 sale.  Make him work for it!  :-)

They were very quick to respond. Sent me this, they’re nice jubaea for sure, and good price at 500. I’m actually looking for bigger but am gonna stop by Oregon palms when we road trip to Cali this summer and check out there stuff. Raintree also I’ve heard is good also would like to stop there.

A generous PT member had sold me two very little Jubea Chilensis, and both went in the ground just a few weeks ago here in North Texas, in two different areas of the property.  Both full sun and prominent spots.  I'm 95% sabals here, but this is one I'd love to grow long-term and encouraged by Tony in DFWs successes over the years with his.  I have a long ways to go before they get as large as the ones here.

They are quite beautiful palms, and incredible just how dang hardy they really are.  Please keep us updated so I can see what I have to look forward to in 10-15 yrs lol.

Subscribe to my YouTube here  to follow along my Sabal obsession....  Quite possibly one of the biggest Sabal plantings in the US.

I saw two big Jubaea for sale yesterday, at One Green World much larger than the ones you showed.  you'd need a cube van with a loading deck and a pumpcart. $850.  These guys are seriously stepping up their palms and exotics game.  Super Ice Blue butias, huge Chamaerops cerifera, wags, and even real Takil.

That’s super nice. About what I’m looking for, Hopefully getting one of these delivered end of the month!

There is one other place that always gets overlooked out this way that has very large Jubaea.  They mostly deal with developers and commercial plantings but they do sell to the public.  Just the basics though.

Good luck with your palm.  I'm quite tempted by these Jubaea here, pretty decent price for what you're getting.

Man, I remember the good old days when you could get a 24" box Jubaea that would be over 6' tall and wide for $500.00.  To bad mine died many years go after three bad winters in a row, it would be a monster by now.

Those are some beauties thou.

Love the blue/silver butia I had one of those too but it died also. LOL!

I'm surprised to hear that you actually killed something.  What a shame though.

I'm all full on Butias with 3, so as nice as those blue ones were I have to pass.  These palms all came from San Francisco they told me.

Both places would be good to check out , and are near I-5 when you're heading south, easy stops to make!
