I picked 2 of these giant seeds up off the ground from under a medium sized palmate palm a few weeks ago. I wasn't expecting much since they were so iron clad, large and half eaten by squirrels or rotted away or something. After cleaning them off a little I threw them in the seed tray on 3/6 its now 3/30 and just to check I pulled one out of the peat moss, low and behold  it sprouted! I checked the other one snd its sprouted too.

So what is it? :lol2:

My guess is Hyphaene, but as Jeremy suggested, a photo of the palm would help a lot!

@kinzyjr @Fusca I didn't take a picture of the palm unfortunately. I looked up Hyphaene seeds and that definitely looks like the seed. It might have been Hyphaene coriacea?

That was my first thought.  They put down a long radicle right away so I would use a deep 14" tree pot or a 5-gal pot.  Here's one I germinated in a 14" tree pot a few years ago:

Update - I put the 2 seeds in 14” cone-tainers and both poked out of the bottom. I carefully transferred one to a 16” stewe treepot and the other to a 20” section of 3” pvc pipe. I might have damaged the root a little..

I sprouted a bunch of hyphaene dichotoma and compressa and threw them all into 5 gallon pots . Couple rooted through those 5 gallon pots no problem in a couple months after sprouting . Next time I’ll go with a much deeper pot haven’t had this happen with bismarks yet . Can anyone confirm they send down a root a little deeper then bismark ?  real deep like borassus In My experience

@JubaeaMan138 This was the first time I germinated any Hyphaene so I don’t know much about them. What I can say is that seed was at the rim of a 14” tall cone and 1” was sticking out the bottom. I think the 5 gal nursery pot was an inch shorter than the cone and I didn't want to force it in. A 5 gal bucket was about 6” taller so that may have been an option. The tap root on this guy is larger and longer than a bizzy without a doubt.

Yeah it’s in between bizzy and borassus .

I had a hyphaene compressa in a 5 gallon that I Had on the bare ground went to move it and literally in the loose mix I pulled the pot right off the plant it had rooted into the ground . Barely a tiny spear on it . So I dug it and out it into the same pot with the seed kind of dangling did fine . Going on it’s second leaf . A lot more Hardy in the root zone maybe than bizzy . I would of guessed it was dead after that . Bismark would of been . I’ve noticed hyphaene don’t like to much water either atleast for me super sensitive to rot
