Suggestions and potentially replacing a Christmas palm?

Recommended Posts

Hi I am in zone 9B and I planted these two Christmas palms next to my garage about two years ago before I knew much about palm cold hardiness. This past winter I covered them up and they still took a small amount of damage. They are fertilized and irrigated often but look pretty spotty most of the year due to the cold. I am wondering if I would get a healthier looking Palm by planting spindle palms in their place. I know that spindles are also a bit cold sensitive, so if you have suggestions for another smaller slower growing Palm that would be helpful thank you

This is the spotty ness I was talking about. They just don’t have that full green lushness until almost August and I know it’s completely cold damage

You've got lots of options there. It all depends on your personal tastes at this point. You can salvage those and grow them as houseplants, too.

That’s a good idea. I really like the tropical exotic plants that are mostly 10a and up. Do you have any recommendations?

Lots of options, depends on your preference. Maybe look into Chambeyronia macrocarpa to add some flair. More cold tolerant, and also grown well in a shaded spot.

What @Fishinsteeg234 said. I like Pritchardias too but I dunno their cold tolerance. Or on the cheap you could do Majesties or Queens. I know they seem basic to us palm dorks, but they're reliable.

I'm learning to love Chamaedorea species because most of them are bombproof, but they're typically not fast. But tbh I'm also growing my palms in a studio apartment in East Texas too, so all of mine are potted and I'm bringing everything inside on and off for 4 months.

I might go with a couple chambeyronia. It would be cool and different and they’re slower growing too which is what I need for that spot. Thanks guys!

The flamethrower palm will have your neighbors in awe when the new spear opens deep red! You can contact MB plams in south orlando, they usually have some in stock fyi.
