Sorry this is more of a rant...but after being assured there was going to be no digging on the property for fiber optic cable or whatever, I came home to this

Salvaged as much as I could from my most precious zone pushing corner. The Chambeyronia was about to open a new leaf and the Geonoma schottiana are irreplaceable. Tons of cosmetic damage to four figures worth of variegated Monstera too. All yanked out like weeds.

Wow, I'm sorry this happened. I would have some serious red ass over this. I don't understand how someone would proceed destroying all of that without notifying the homeowner of what needs to be done. At a minimum, you could have maybe dug some up if there was no other route. Unacceptable and disrespectful to say the least. I hope there is some recourse with the utility provider.

From the pictures it looks like it is inside your fence line and not in an easement. Are they allowed to enter your property to look for utility lines?

Well if that is a easement you're screwed because they can come and just remove your palms in the future to get their line.   Check your property map and see.  If it is not then call your local city codes dept and see what is going on and make them stop.

I feel your pain Jonathan - so sorry to see such thoughtlessness.  :crying:  I recently had some "lawn maintenance" done on my property in San Antonio by the property management without my consent.   I mowed before I moved and the only difference I noted when I returned to the property a couple of weeks later was that they weed-wacked a juvenile Trithrinax acanthacoma and Butia x Jubaea in the front yard.  The Trithrinax looked similar to your Lyto but should survive and the BxJ I was planning to dig out and transplant but it was wacked beyond recognition.  The problem for me was that they charged me $55 to do that!!

Been there... and it sucks horribly.

They should have asked for permission before entering your property. Utility companies here in S. Fl. have learned that out of fear of getting injured, but it is not always perfect. That looks way too deep for just fiber optic cable. I guess they couldn't or wouldn't use a horizontal/directional drill machine? I hope everything you had to salvage and rescue recovers.

I have areas in my yard that are frequent targets of utility companies, to the point where I lose so much over and over again that I can not ever plant anything in those spots. I have a heavy power line to a transformer, plus water, cable and gas lines that overlap in the same area. During most of 2020, all of the utilities decided to upgrade everything all at the same time, it was a disaster. Each utility was at war with the other. Utility A would damage Utility B's line and had to have them come & fix it, then 'B' damaged 'C' then 'C' would dig a giant hole bigger than needed, then 'D''s line was destroyed... etc.

The only fun was photographing it all, much to their dismay. It is funny how so many crews are brought in from parts unknown. Some were scared of 'hitting the basement' which do not exist here in S. Fl., others were so scared of alligators they were afraid to enter the yard. I do have the achievement of throwing a FP&L (power company) crew out of my backyard one time, that was fun. They were extremely nasty, foul-mouthed and I think one was drunk. They didn't like me watching them so I threw them out, via the police. They lost it, saying if 'they didn't finish, they would not get paid', so no pay then. The next day it was very quiet.

@Xenon Don't blame you for venting at all.  It's pretty hard to see someone or a group of someones screw up years of work in a few minutes.  The old pillow case with a door knob in it should fix that ;)

When they tried something like that in my yard I told them I do a lot of digging and their line probably would be cut many times they decided to go on the other side of the street!!

sorry to see this.

I am in south Florida and most of the fiber optics line they do with directional drilling, no shovel involved.

In fact, I know someone who had a sewer back up.  Hired a plumber, and the plumber had the line jetted and sent a camera down, and guess what, sees a fiber optic cable going right through the middle of his PVC pipe.

So his plumber send down a full size cutting head, and cut the line cable.

AT&T came a day later trouble shooting with some sort of a probe and computer, and my friend told them if they want to fix it they need to dig down to the pipe so the line will pass either over or under the sewer line...and they need to pay for patching the two hole.  The line is small but the drill head is bigger so they made two fairly large holes through the 4" PVC pipe, where roots can enter easily.

That must have been a little heart breaking to come home too..so sorry

There was a guy replacing some boards on the porch one day when I arrived home,I asked him not to step on the

tree ferns and palms and he said it was unavoidable- it was all I could do not to show him what else was going

to be avoidable when Jack Johnson and Tom Oleary (Anchorman reference:)) start raining fists all over his face and body!

I had to go inside before I beat on him- I came back down and put bamboo stakes all around the plants.

Once again, sorry you had to come home to that = send them a bill for the palms they dug up.
