Did my Ensete died?

Hi

I am in a zone 7b. These bananas are fairly common here and survive mulched overwinter.Mine would be in their second year but everything else is coming out but them. I cut part of the trunk to see inside. It’s wet and mushy. Did they die? Or they haven’t come out yet? Winter was real warm.

Thxs

I'd guess that one is dead, especially if the center brown section smells like rotting garbage.  Usually bananas/ensete grow back for me if the center is still nice and white.  I don't know if that species pups, but sometimes the main trunk dies and rots, but you get pups off the side.
