Bought as Dypsis Lanceolata x Lutescens but not sure about that. The 2nd boot in a month just fell off exposing some cool color. This was a tiny 5G the size of a broomstick 3yrs ago.

(Tied up so not to overhang the walkway)

Here’s a milestone I’m pretty proud of. I bought this Chrysalidocarpus cabadae x madagascariensis probably about 20 years ago as a small palm with 3 stems. After I planted it, it slowly declined and shrunk over the next decade until only 1 stem with 1 frond remained. I finally decided to dig it out as a last resort but really with very minimal hope it would grow. After a bit of TLC in a pot for a couple of years and then 5 more years in the ground in my new garden, I now have clear trunk! Really this hybrid shouldn’t even be growing in my climate, let alone with its far from ideal history. An ideal spot on a North facing brick wall has no doubt helped.

First time I’ve seen the trunk on this Cyphophoenix alba. Been in the ground for years and the leaf sheaths are stubborn to come off.

Tim I know that sense of frustration when they crawl along instead of going vertical.   I had several attempts with this species and the only surviving one did this for years.  One of two Chrysalidocarpus ambositae also did this which resulted in the crawler having significantly less ringed trunk today.  Both of the C. ambositrae were planted at similar size and a short time apart. 

Congratulations.  Hopefully you have liftoff now.

I’ve definitely had that frustrating growth habit on palms before. Honestly with this Hedyscepe it has always been growing larger and adapting to more sun so it hasn’t been a frustrating journey with this one. But yes, I do hope it will take off now. I love the trunk and crownshaft once they get a bit of size.

Winter is not over yet! Situation is a bit more complicated than you probably think of. Coldest soil temps follow by 7 weeks coldest air temps, which follow by 7 weeks shortest day of the year. In other words after 14 weeks since 22 December I will be able to make a final estimation of any winter damage. Up to now there is no apparent crown damage but roots have not yet been exposed to coldest temps of the year.

Cyphophoenix elegans loves full coastal sun here in Leucadia and has proven to be my fastest New Cal palm by a mile.

Update. Just 3 years of growth later. Once a final trunk diameter is formed,vertical growth speeds up considerably from 1 new frond per year,to two. 🚀😆
