A Washingtonia robusta which is at least 40ft+. Hard to tell from the photo as it's zoomed in quite a bit and half of it is hidden. Completely outside London's urban heat island 50 miles inland at 51N. For reference those other Washingtonias next to it are around 20ft tall.

My wife wanted something oasis like, for now it’s still sloppy, among many other things I planted 7 C cabadae seedlings 2-3 years ago and today I counted 23 trunks from those so they will hopefully add a nice touch to the project.

What amazes me about these is the glossy dark green color of the fronds . Mine is fairly small but seems moderate to fast for growth. It hasn’t clumped yet but it has a bit of a heel. Yours is a beauty , how old is it? Harry

Yea , the teeth are discouraging . Spines  are even more aggressive, keeping even the most cautious gardener away! That’s why my Livistona and P. Reclinata are down the hill. My poor wife went down there to pull weeds from around a thick clump of P. Reclinata and came back up with scars on her arms. HarryIMG_4157.thumb.jpeg.e1d6378b21d3a8a6c4f6775db323ed29.jpeg

She did a good job though!

Harry, I remember reading a thread dedicated to discussing the variation of Dypsis lanceolata. It seems that there two (if not more) forms of Dypsis lanceolata. One being the glossy leaf, orangish color on the emergent frond, less hardy version, and the other being the "normal" darker green leaf, no color on the emergent, that tolerates both the sun and cold a lot better than the other. I'm growing both versions here in Leucadia but the one I shared from the photo unfortunately isn't mine. The palm in the photo I shared is growing in Hanalei. I saw both forms growing on various properties in Hanalei Bay which made me appreciate having them here on the mainland even more. Best of luck with your lanceolata!

The one I have is the one without coloring on the emergent frond . I got it earlier in the year from @DoomsDave. It has opened a new frond and growing another spear now . It has not clumped yet but it is young and has a heel on one side like it may send out a new pup at some point. HarryIMG_0367.thumb.jpeg.955b52307e97d40709c522922b436f31.jpeg

‘This is right after planting , the spear has since opened and anew spear has emerged about the size of this oneIMG_0369.thumb.jpeg.aca667be0563c8003d03d92f1b283d6f.jpeg

this shows the heel off to one sideIMG_0423.thumb.jpeg.07e28cf76771744ca3c2c3ee1bfe6b6e.jpeg

Somebody posted some updated photos of Peter Jenkins' Phoenix Theophrasti growing out near Heathrow airport in the outer suburbs of far western London. I can't get over how silver looking the fronds are. Quite a contrast to the deep green CIDP's that are so prevalent around London nowadays. Photo credit goes to Rob Small.

GfvGAg4WUAAMwp3.thumb.jpg.a7a5e15847f2cc228150e185aa215b40.jpg

GfvFYiZWwAAbbSq.thumb.jpg.745cc5b56e8b80721da9663c9b0ef98e.jpg

Location of palm shown with green marker in far west London where the UHI is minimal. Maybe +2C of protection on the coldest of nights there, compared to about +6C of UHI protection for central London. There aren't really any CIDP's growing in the far western suburbs of Ashford/Stanwell, and certainly none as big as this Cretan Date palm, which suggests that Theophrasti is actually a lot hardier and withstands more cold. It is clearly outdoing any nearby CIDP's in that particular area. Never protected to my knowledge.

Just this morning I spotted this Dypsis lutescens growing outdoors, in a big pot, in a bar terrace at 43⁰N.

First time I see one. I think it's been there for 3 years now, because that bar was built back then.

Even after over three decades, common palms (on a gloomy day in Laguna Beach nonetheless),  still catch my eye. I suppose that’s what happens when you grow up in Indiana!

Is there a thread showcasing this person’s garden? The Phoenix is a real eye catcher with those incredible silver leaves and the detailed thick trunk. The rest of the garden looks really nice too though, i’d like to see more of it.
